Mounted, oval-shaped sepia-toned head-and-shoulders portrait photograph of a man with a beard, wearing a suit. Areas of his beard, eyes, and the shadow on his face have been retouched in ink. A handwritten note on the verso suggests that the subject is Detroit Fire Department chief James Battle, however he does not resemble Battle in portraits taken later in his life. A Grelling and Company stamp is impressed near the bottom of the image.
