Karanis; Textiles; Wool

Notes:
Fragment of yellowed woven wool fabric with three purple weft bands near the center. The bands are 1.5 cm., 1.1 cm and 1.5 cm wide and are approximately 2.5 cm apart. At one side, the first and third bands become larger, possibly circular. Inside the circular areas are remnants of linen weft wrapping. Around the edges there are small linen slit tapestry elements. There are two countered weft-twining rows near one edge. The first row is 2.3 cm from one of the purple weft bands. The second row is 1.2 cm from the first row and only goes 2/3 of the way across the fragment. This row is a double countered weft-twining row which becomes a single countered weft-twining row. The twining loops pass over two warps each. Two small pieces of the same fabric were sewn on to this fragment.
