- Smoke rises in background as man on left appears to be throwing something and other men, some holding sticks stand off to right, during the Flint sit-down strike against General Motors at the Fisher Body Plant. "Among the plants closed by a sit-down strike was Fisher No. 2, also in Flint, the company responded by turning off the heat, and the cold winter caused the strikers there to compare themselves to George Washington and his men at Valley Forge, then, on Jan. 11, 1937, the police tried to stop food delivery, a riot ensued, "The rioting at Flint resulted in injury to 16 strikers and spectators and 11 officers," The Detroit News reported, the condition of one striker was reported to be critical, most of the strikers were injured by buckshot fired from riot guns by the Flint police, the officers were injured principally by missiles thrown from the plant by the stay-in strikers," from The historic 1936-37 Flint auto plant strikes, by Vivian M. - Likely worn by Thomas Palmer Bradfield of Orchard Lake, Michigan during the 1930s.No matching jersey or shirt; however, it is clear a shirt would have buttoned to the interior of the waistband. Little usage, although there are a few stains.Thomas Palmer Bradfield was born 1899 in Grand Rapids, MI. He was born in to one of Michigan's oldest mining families.His great grandfather, Charles Henry Palmer, was a pioneer investor and developer of mines and railroads in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. His grandfather, Charles Henry Palmer, Jr. continued to run his father's businesses and expanded them, with mines in Montana, Colorado, and Mexico. His mother, Elizabeth Virginia Palmer Bradfield, continued to look after her family's estate as well as becoming an accomplished sculptress. His father was Thomas Parks Bradfield, a graduate of University of Michigan and a lawyer.
