- Description:
- Dr. Joseph McCartin, professor of history at Georgetown University, delivers a talk entitled, "Collision Course: The 1981 Air Traffic Controllers Strike and the Decline of Collective Bargaining in the U.S." McCartin recaps the Controller strike and President Reagan's immediate reaction and then describes the relevance of the strike and its aftermath. He also cites the popular mythology that has arisen around the strike, and how this mythology has been co-opted by politicians to justify more recent actions taken against public sector labor. Former Controller Rick Long describes his experiences and the effect the strike had on his career. A question and answer period follows. McCartin is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the MSU Museum. Held at the MSU Museum.
