- Description:
- In this paper, the authors argue that press freedom is a key element of democracy. They, however, contend that for the press to serve its meaningful role towards a country's sustainable development, it must be transparent, accountable and responsible. The authors draw extensively from research findings in Nigeria and Sierra Leone, which to them are adequately representative of the entire Sub-Saharan Africa region. The paper discusses at length some factors which affect sustainable development, as well as the performance of the press in the two countries. The conclusions made are that the press systems in both Nigeria and Sierra Leone are neither democratic nor do they serve the cause of ensuring sustainable development. A major weakness, the authors maintain, is the fact that the press in the two countries pay more attention to the outside world than to issues affecting their predominantly illiterate population.

- Description:
- The concept of population is contrasted to that of development in the African context and seen to be closely related. Different propositions regarding this relationship are considered and the consequent effects seen either to impede or enhance the living conditions of people. The problem of population and development is viewed as having a spatial consequence, particularly dirough the migration into the cities of many people from the rural areas. Although conceptual difficulties do arise in any attempt to measure change, this should not prevent us from attempting to address the issues concerned. Factors which need to be taken into account by Africa planners and policy makers include such areas as employment, availability of food, education, health, housing and equality of opportunity for all.

- Description:
- Current initiatives by the G7 and other Western creditors to write off the debts of the world's heavily indebted countries, the majority of which are in Sub-Saharan Africa, has interested both African states themselves and among non-governmental organizations working towards poverty alleviation. If this is implemented, governments will no longer have to divert large proportions of national revenue away from development to debt-servicing obligations. This article argues, however, that Sub-Saharan Africa debt is attributable to both internal and external factors, aggravated by the hostile global economy and by the lending conditionalities of international financial institutions. The paper is optimistic that unconditional debt cancellation will allow Sub-Saharan Africa to emerge from decay and stagnation. However, it warns that, while it is a necessary condition for improvement, debt cancellation alone is not sufficient to reverse the despondency into which Sub-Saharan Africa has fallen. Debt cancellation must be augmented by interrelated domestic policies such as deepening democratization, striving towards gender parity, stemming conditions that precipitate incessant conflicts, reversing the region’s crumbling environmental conditions, and fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

- Description:
- A critical challenge now facing social development education in Africa is the urgent need to specify, in concrete terms, the content of social development, to isolate the basic ingredients of the roles and tasks of social development practitioners, to determine the knowledge, skills and behaviour requirements of those roles and tasks, to design and produce the necessary teaching materials, and to arrange relevant field learning experiences.
