- A Michigan State University faculty panel participates in a discussion entitled, "Questioning Technology." Panelists describe their research, perspectives and conclusions about technology standards and security and how it rules our daily lives, the risks people are willing and unwilling to take with technology, countries that source the technology and whether that is changing. Panelists are: Paul Thompson, Ph.D.; Erik Goodman, Ph.D.; Lawrence Busch, Ph.D.; Logan Williams, Ph.D.; and Tobin Craig, Ph.D., John P. Beck, Professor of Human Resources and Labor Relations, convenes the session and moderates questions from the audience. Part of the series "Sharper Focus/Wider Lens" sponsored by the MSU Honors College. Co-sponsors for this event are: College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, College of Arts and Letters, College of Engineering, College of Social Science, James Madison College, Lyman Briggs College, Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, Department of Philosophy, and Department of Sociology. - Dave talks about being hired in August 1976, his first day in the Body Shop jungle, and a variety of pranks. He tells of beginning his apprenticeship in 1979 and receiving his journeyman's card 1989. Dave discusses lines of demarcation, overtime, wages, family issues and working Sundays when families of the tradesmen would come to the plant and picnic outside.

- Between 1929 and 1966, J. Nyhof Poel served as Treasurer and Clerk of Ottawa County and was responsible for establishing the use of voting machines in the county. In this interview, Poel talks about the Grand Avenue / Sheldon Road area of Grand Haven and its development by Jas. W. Oakes after World War I. He also discusses the loading docks at the end of Columbus Street, water quality issues with the Grand River, the Grand Trunk and the Interurban railroads, the tugboats H.J. Dornbos and C.J. Bos, and the effect of the Great Depression on the community. Poel further delves into a discussion of local and national politics and the 1930 election of President Roosevelt.

- William Ayers discusses his personal journey from 1960s radical and co-founder of the Weather Underground to college professor of education. Ayers takes a number of questions from the audience to frame his talk. He compares his own experiences in the sixties to how the era is portrayed in modern culture and talks about the broad cultural and constitutional issues that were at stake. Ayers also compares the political climate of the sixties to the Bush era and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. He says that he personally disavows violence, but also says that living a moral life requires action. Ayers is introduced by Michigan State University Professor Arthur J. Verslius. Part of the MSU Libraries' Colloquia Series, held at the MSU Main Library.

- Grand Haven residents Tony Boomgaard and Pete Klaasen reminisce about life during the early part of the twentieth century. With no formal schooling, Boomgaard started work as a pharmacist in 1920, and Klaasen was the grocery manager of Henry Casemir's Supermarket. They recall the old fire barn and the horse-drawn engines, early medical remedies, various businesses and theaters located on Washington Street, and estimate that at the height of railroad transportation, ninety trains visited Grand Haven on a daily basis. They also discuss the importance of the Dutch language in the early school system.
