- Description:
- Men gather outside the Dodge plant in Detroit, Michigan during sit-down strike, one man stands next to a picket sign which reads, Welcome sheriff, we are here to stay." "...the Chrysler strike lacked the fireworks of Flint, planning for it was so open that even corporation officials knew when and where the strike would begin, but they also knew they could do nothing to prevent it, when Dick Frankensteen phoned John Zaremba inside the Dodge Main plant with the order to launch the strike, Zaremba raised his hand in an arranged signal and the shop stewards shut down the plant, within five minutes not a machine or assembly line stirred, again a substantial minority, acting with the sympathy and passive support of the majority halted the operations of one of the industry's giants, perhaps as many as 15,000 of Chrysler's workforce of 67,000 were UAW members when the strike began and about 6,000 were active strike participants," from "American Vanguard: The United Auto Workers During the Reuther Years, 1935-1970," by John Barnard.

- Description:
- Communist party leader Carl Winter walks with a group of African Americans, carrying signs protesting the killing of Leon Mosely by a Detroit Police Officer in 1948. "The police problem burst back into public debate with the shooting death of a black teenager, Leon Mosely, in June 1948, some facts of the case were undisputed, Mosely stole a car and was joy riding when patrolman, Louis Melasi spotted his haphazard driving and gave chase, Mosely sped to get away, then crashed into a light pole, versions of what happened next differed, Melasi said Mosely got out of the car in a menacing fashion, then tried to flee, African-American witnesses said Mosely stepped out of the car too dazed to walk, Melasi beat him and then shot him when he tried to defend himself, a coroner's jury, sifting through the evidence a month after the incident, concluded that the killing was 'unnecessary, unwise and unjustifiable'," from Bridging the River of Hatred: The Pioneering Efforts of Detroit Police Commissioner, George Edwards by Mary M. Stolberg.

- Description:
- Striking MESA (Mechanics Educational Society of America) workers stand inside glass door to the Nash-Kelvinator plant in Detroit, Michigan, as three women stand outside looking at them. "The strike was typical of the middle-level sit-downs that occurred during the next eight weeks, the two thousand workers in the plants were already organized, the strike began when the company failed to act on grievances arising from "misunderstandings" at the Plymouth Road and Fort Street facilities, the union immediately added wage demands, on February 9, while great events were in the offing at the Statler, MESA picketers captured the office building as well, saying that the company harbored strike breakers in the office," from Maurice Sugar: Law, Labor, and the Left in Detroit 1912-1950, by Christopher H. Johnson.

- Description:
- Portrait of Gladys Sweet, wife of Ossian, an African American physician who became the center of a highly publicized murder trial. "Dr. Sweet, a graduate of Howard University Medical School, bought this two-story brick house in an all-white Detroit neighborhood in 1925, on July 14, the neighborhood's residents protested his plans to move in and stated that they intended to retain what they called "the present high standards of the neighborhood," on September 8, Dr. Sweet, his wife, and nine gun-carrying associates moved into the house under police escort, the next night a large crowd of whites began pelting the house with rocks and bottles; they then rushed the house, a volley of gunshots issued forth from the second story windows, killing one man and seriously wounding another, the Detroit police arrested Dr. Sweet and his companions and charged them with first-degree murder, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) hired Clarence Darrow, America's most famous lawyer after his defense of evolution in the Scopes Monkey Trial, to defend Dr. Sweet, after 26 hours of deliberation, the jury returned without a verdict, Judge Frank Murphy, later to become governor of Michigan and a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, declared a mistrial and released Dr. Sweet, subsequent trials upheld the right of Sweet and his companions, regardless of race, to protect life and property in dangerous situations," from the National Park Service website.

- Three people stand at concession stand inside the Fox Theater on Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. "The crowning achievement of Crane's career in Detroit was the Fox Theater on Woodward Avenue, seating over five thousand people, it outdistanced all other movie palaces in the city in the magnitude of its proportions, the vast auditorium, unobstructed by columns, was a marvel of engineering, but the aspect that elicited the most unbridled panegyrics from the press at the time of the opening in 1928 was the fantastic magnificence of the decor," from "The Buildings of Detroit: a History" by W. Hawkins Ferry. The Fox Theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and designated a National Historical Landmark in 1989.
