A 5-line flourished intial “T” opens the text., Indenture (mortgage) between John and Elizabeth Raymond, Essex and Dorothy Collard of Barnstone, Essex for ₤350 to John and Elizabeth Raymond for conveyance of capital massuage, Chelmshoes house and barns, stables, dove house [etc.] and lands in great Maplest[de?] and Deetingthorp [sp?], Essex. Containing 66 acres. Name of John Richardson mentioned. Two red-wax, impressed seals (design not visible), each stamped on tags., Written in clear mixed hand (secretary and italic conflations). Opening words and later, emphasized in larger bastard anglicana script. Pricking in both margins., and Written in England, county of Essex and dated 25 August 2 James II. At middle center in the near-contemporary hand, “15/18 [?] | Mr and Mrs Raymond | to | Mrs Collard} Release” and three illgible words in a near contemporary hand followed by “1686.” Also at the middle center of dorse in a later hand: “9.” Gift of the Western Michigan University Department of History to Special Collections in 1999.

- Catchword partially cropped on the lower margin of f. 162v., 16th century gilt-tooled arabesque binding or pasteboard, with small marks on edges of boards where clasps were once attached. Binding damaged. Stub of missing leaf between ff. 10v - 11r., On f. 54r: 4-line historiated initial in pink enclosing the Virgin and St. Anne on gold grounds, with a three-quarter decorated board derived from a depiction of the acanthus plant containing occasional hairline foliage and vines, and flowers in gold, and fruit. Some names in the calendar are written in gold. Long ornamental cadelles extending into the top and lower margins, some with skilled caricatures of human faces. Rubricated in red, blue and gold. A 1-line initial in gold on pink and blue grounds with white penwork with line fillers of bars or flower heads on same line. 2-line initials in blue or pink on gold enclosing foliage or colored balls or flowers or foliage or fruit on grounds of gold. On f. 36r: 3-line inital in blue with white penwork, enclosing pink and blue foliage with white penwork, on a ground of gold. On f. 51v and 108v: foliate motif border in outer margin derived from a depiction of the acanthus plant containing occasional hairline foliage and vines, and flowers in gold. On f. 157r: 2-line initial in blue with white penwork, enclosing a strawberry, on ground of gold. On f. 74r-v and f. 77v., outline impression of an initial and foliage border. Many pages have black, red, and blue ink stains. Gold and paint in the initials flaking from some leaves. On f. 8, the top of leaf is cropped with loss of text., A Book of Hours containing a calendar (missing calendar leaves for January and February); Gospel Readings followed by prayers; the Hours of the Virgin; the Penitential Psalms, followed by prayers and a Litany; the Hours of the Cross; the Office of the Dead; the Sulfrages to the Saints, followed by a single prayer which a blue rubric announces. Initials through out are illuminated, and one initial is historiated with a miniature of the Virgin and St. Anne., 1 column of 13 lines ruled in red written in lettre batarde., and “1542” on last main text leaf possibly indicating the precise date of the binding.

- Eight sheets joined by parchment tie in upper left corner., Eight parchment court rolls, folded, relating to West Hanningfield, Essex, all of which are contemporary with one another and are joined together by a single parchment tie. Extensive damage to the membranes of several rolls with significant loss of text., Written in English secretary script, likely all by the same hand. Ink bleeding through the parchment. Item 1 is written in slightly larger and darker hand with opening words in bastard anglicana., and Written in England, probably in West Hanningfield between 1603 and 1611 (each document has a different date). On the first item, dorse: the number”59” in pencil. On item 2, dorse: “843” in pencil. Gift of Western Michigan University Department of History to WMU Special Collections in 1999.

A 13 line, single color, initial “T” with flourishes opens the text., Indenture document (conveyance) between John Manwood of Broomfield, Essex, gentleman, and John Greene of Boreham, Essex, yeoman, witnessing that the latter has paid John Manwood ₤145 and twelve parcels of meadow ground containing 11 acres in Riseley Meade and Boreham, another Broade Meade in parishes of Boreham, Little Baddowe and Springfield Essex in occupation of John Ashbey. Excepts Mortgage 7 December 1633 to Henry Godsatte of Broomfield, Essex, for a lease for 99 years. Parchment tag still attached, lacking seal., Written in late England secretary script with italic influences. Opening words and later emphasized words in larger bastard anglicana script. Pricking in outer left margin for ruling., and Written in England and dated 16 December, 22 Charles II (1670). Two inscriptions on the dorse: towards the top in a similar script to that of the main text, “sealed and delivered in the house of William [sp?], John Green, William Holiday, ...”; towards the bottom in darker ink and later hand, “Manwood to Green. All items include the name of Richard Humfrey and Richard Cannon., Eight parchment court rolls relating to West Hanningfield, Essex, all of which are contemporary with one another and are joined together by a single parchment tie. Extensive damage to the membranes of several rolls with significant loss of text. Contents include: Richard Cannon surrenders tenement called Tanners in West Hanningfield to use of Richard Gynne and Humphrey Brooke sues (item 1); death and will records for Richard Cannon (item 2); death and will of Rchard Humfrey (item 4); licenses to fell trees (item 6); license to lease holding (item 7); and surrender and readmission of Richard Humfrey (item 8)., Written in English secretary script, likely all by the same hand.
