- Michigan State University History Professor Juan Javier Pescador delivers a talk entitled, "Soccer Community Formation and the Creation of a Mexican Barrio in the Great Lakes." Pescador describes how the affinity for sports, especially soccer, helped create a social space to initiate political participation, define ethnicity, defy segregation, and celebrate a notion of being Mexican. He looks at the evolution and transformation of the Mexican soccer communities. Pescador is introduced by Kurt Dewhurst, Director of the Center for Great Lakes Culture. Part of the Michigan Sate University Libraries' Colloquia Series and cosponsored by the Center for Great Lakes Culture. Held in the MSU Main Library.

- Andres G. Guerrero, author of "A Chicano Theology," reminisces about his childhood in east Texas, his family and his education, and describes his personal evolution and awakening as a community organizer and teacher working with the poor in the Saginaw, MI Diocese. Guerrero, who holds a doctorate in theology, says that most religions are Euro-centric and do not account for a "native way" of thinking and he challenges all religious institutions to simply "teach love". Guerrero also discusses his book and suggests areas for further study in leadership, organizing, and managing power for the benefit of the entire Chicano Latino community and not just the few. Guerrero is interviewed by Michigan State University Librarian Diana Rivera for the "Mexican Voices - Michigan Lives" oral history series.

Obama asserts the Promise Zones, where federal agencies cut through red tape in an effort to give struggling residents a chance at better lives, will create a better bargain for the middle-class by partnering with local communities and businesses to create jobs, increase economic security, expand educational opportunities, increase access to quality, affordable housing and improve public safety. Obama is introduced by Kiara Molina, a student at the Harlem Promise Zone. Held at the Harlem Children's Zone Promise Academy.

- This paper describes the development of a training programme for people with no formal training in community work. A programme which would equip them for work in troubled townships and 'homelands' in South Africa. An attempt was made to develop a programme particularly relevant to the needs of South Africa, with emphasis on personal growth and participation, and on a problem posing and problem management approach. Details of some of the actual techniques and strategies used are given, with explanations of the underlying assumptions made by the training designers. The paper ends with a summary of the learning gained from the experience of developing the training programme.
