- The photograph is dated 1857, but an article in the Lansing State Journal in 1911 states that the business was established in 1860, and not formally incorporated until 1901. B. F. Simons Sr. founded it, and his sons B. F. Jr. and Howard A. operated it into the 20th century. The photograph was probably taken sometime around 1900.

Stores along the block include: Porter's women's clothing at 105, Liebermann Trunk Company at 107, Lansing Camera Shop at 109, Len's Mens Shop and Parker Jewelry at 111, Mills Dry Goods at 113, Two Legs mens clothing at 115, Dr Scholl Foot Comfort Shop and National Peanut Corp. at 117, a vacancy-formerly Roberts Jewelry at 119, and Morgan Jewelry at 121.
