- Wayne State University Professor of Political Science Amy Bromsen delivers a talk entitled, "'They all sort of disappeared': the early cohort of UAW women leaders". Bromsen recounts the history of women in UAW represented workplaces and the associated separate pay scale, available jobs, and other discrimination. She describes attempts by UAW President Walter Reuther to address gender discrimination in the union, the creation of the UAW Women's Department, and the resistance these efforts met in the male dominated organization. A question and answer session concludes the session. Bromsen is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. - Colonel Melissa Lee (U.S. Army Reserve) talks about her working with private contractors to serve military units in war zones and then introduces President Barack Obama and the First Lady. Michelle Obama announces that the corporations that make up the American Logistics Association have committed to hiring 25,000 military veterans and spouses over the next two years. President Obama explains that hiring veterans makes good business sense and that veterans bring extraordinary skill to the work place. The event is held at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton, VA as part of the Presidential bus tour on jobs.

- President Obama speaks to troops at Fort Bliss, Texas on the two-year anniversary of the end of the combat mission in Iraq. Obama declares that part of ending wars responsibly requires standing with and supporting those who have served. He pays tribute to the soldiers from Bliss who have served and those who will not return. Obama announces a new executive order on mental health services for veterans as well as hiring programs that have found jobs for over 100,000 veterans.

He says that investments in the auto industry are helping create and save American jobs and he praises workers and the products made at the plant. - Dr. Jeffrey Rothstein delivers a talk entitled, "When good jobs go bad: globalization, de-Unionization and declining labor standards in the North American auto industry". Rothstein compares three General Motors auto plants around the world while talking about the changing nature of jobs and the impact on work in the auto industry in the face of a globalization of the manufacturing economy. He describes good auto industry jobs which provide access to the middle class, but says that these jobs are getting steadily worse. He calls for an international labor standards structure to protect workers. A question and answer session concludes the session. Rothstein is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. - Willie describes being raised in Monroe, Louisiana. He attended college and hired into Fisher in August 1969. He describes work in the Body Shop where a majority of workers were black and were spread out on the line "so they couldn't talk." Willie spent a short time as a per diem supervisor but decided to get active in the UAW and was elected committeeman. He discusses racism, graffiti, and daily life in the factory.

Chaudhuri describes the origins and operations of the Indian group SEWA and their efforts to bring economic justice to Indian women who perform the most undesirable jobs, usually outside of the formal employment structure. - Clare Luz, professor in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Department of Family Medicine at Michigan State University, delivers a talk entitled "Critical lifelines: the lives and work of personal care workers." Luz discusses her research on personal care workers and shares stories of the workers from Michigan who she interviewed. Luz says there is a shortage of personal care workers in the U.S., especially in Michigan, which could be addressed by paying higher wages, improving working conditions, and encouraging broad societal support of those in the field. Khalid Ibrahim, Clinical Research Informatics Technologist with the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute at MSU, who also participated in the personal care worker study, provides additional commentary on the interviews of care workers. Luz answers questions from the audience. The event is convened by Professor John P. Beck from the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations.
