- Prisoners of war are busy washing their laundry outdoors on the Hauptstrasse (Main Street) of the prison camp at Goettingen. This "street" was the main thoroughfare in the camp and was bordered by the barracks. A garden is in the foreground of the photograph which included both flowers and vegetables. These crops helped to diversify the prisoners' diets during the summer.

- The editor of The Messenger to the Prisoners of War works on the copy for the latest edition of this monthly newspaper. The Messenger was published in French, English, German, Russian, Serbian, Italian, and Bulgarian by the World's Alliance of YMCA's. The contents included spiritual and moral material, but focused primarily on historical, scientific, and literary articles. The first editor of "The Messenger" was W. Gottsched and he was later replaced by Ernst Sartorius.

- A panoramic view of the prison camp at Meschede, probably taken in the Spring or Summer of 1915. The quarantine camp where newly arrived POWs were housed is located to the lower left. At the bottom of the photograph is the railway line that transported prisoners and supplies to the prison camp.

- Gravely wounded German and Russian soldiers lie on blankets and pillows on the floor of this building in Suwalki, Poland. These men's wounds were too serious to allow them to be transported to a field hospital for better care.

- A panoramic view of the prison camp at Rennbahn (Muenster II) showing how the facility was divided into four quarters by two perpendicular streets. Barracks formed the perimeter of the compound. By dividing the camp into different compounds, the Germans could improve security by organizing the number of POW's into smaller units while maintaining economies of scale for camp operations in regard to transportation, supply, feeding, and medical care. Note the tennis courts in the center of the compound, on the street running to the left.

- Five Russian prisoners cut up wood scraps to prepare a fire to boil water to make tea in the prison compound at Hammerstein. The wooden barracks in the camp stand in the background. German authorities did not allow prisoners to cook inside of their barracks due to the threat of fire, although tea or water could be boiled on top of the heating stoves during the winter.

- The Germans employed prisoners with special skills to support camp operations. Russian POW's work on a number of projects inside the carpenter shop at Muensingen. They are building tables and cabinets with the various tools that are scattered around the workshop and on the walls. POW labor made prison camps self-supporting.

- A stream of Belgian prisoners of war march through Muenster on their way to the prison camp under German guard. Many of the POW's still have their belongings which will be useful to them during their captivity.
