Notes:
This is a sketch of Peter, aged thirteen, who was the youngest prisoner at Torgau. He had been a powder monkey (boys who provided ammunition to artillery or troops in battle) in the Russian Army and probably followed his father into military service when the Russians mobilized in 1914.

2. Russian POWs Singing at the Canteen in Torgau

Notes:
This sketch of a group of Russian officers at Torgau, enjoying the evening by drinking hot tea and caramel beer while singing hymns in the prison camp canteen. Officers had a lot of time on their hands, especially since they were not expected to work by the German authorities.

3. Morning Exercises at Torgau

British officers perform their morning exercise through callisthenics in front of a group of German guards at Torgau. The British prisoners maintained their daily military drill to the amazement of their German captors.

4. POW Art and Handicraft Exposition at Torgau

Notes:
Prison camps often held art exhibitions which displayed the work of POW's. This is a general view of the exhibition of officers' work at Torgau in 1915, highlighting the paintings which featured portraits and landscapes. The exhibit also included decorative flowers and plants. Sometimes the art work was sold at POW exhibitions, which provided prisoners with extra income to improve their standard of living.

5. POW Paintings at Torgau

Notes:
This photograph shows a wall of paintings produced by Allied officers at Torgau at an art exhibition in 1915. The paintings range from portraits of women and Serbian soldiers to landscapes, probably of the prison camp and surrounding area. The quality of this art work was quite good and painting was a way prisoners could escape from the confines of the prison, at least mentally.
