- Two copies. "The first Oldsmobile built by the Olds Motor Vehicle Company, organized in 1897, was the 'horseless carriage' turned out that same year. it was produced in a tiny shop on River Street in Lansing, Michigan, and was the predecessor to millions of Oldsmobiles which since have been manufactured in the vast plants of what is now the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors Corporation. It is now permanently housed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., as an example of early automotive pioneering."

- Description:
- These records from the Lansing Business Men's Association document some of the organization's activities in helping to establish Lansing as the home of several strong industries in the early 20th century. Although the records are incomplete and sometimes fragmentary, minutes, memos, and other material point to the group's efforts in purchasing land that was then sold to businessmen such as R. E. Olds, and in the oversight of the paving of Michigan Avenue "macadam road" from the Capitol to M. A. C. (Michigan State University). Lists of factories in the area, three unattributed speeches, and financial records are also included in the collection. Most material is organized in files by year. The Lansing Business Men's Association was in existence from its founding in 1901, through 1911 when it was reconfigured to follow the chamber of commerce model that existed in many cities already. For more information on the LBMA and the history of the Chamber of Commerce, see this link.
