- Dr. John A. Rice delivers a lecture titled, "Music and the Grand Tour in the 18th Century" at the Michigan State University Main Library. Using musical excerpts, Rice describes a relatively peaceful Europe after 1715 and the upper middle class phenomenon of touring for art, music and culture. He explains that touring musicians, exposed to a wide variety of compositions, theater, opera, and carnivals, brought a tremendous diversity of music back to their respective countries thus dramatically diversifying the landscape of music and culture throughout Europe. Dr. Rice speaks as part of the 2013 Hollander Distinguished Lecture series in Musicology. He is introduced by MSU Professor Marcie Ray. The event is convened by MSU Professor Michael Largey.

- Michigan folk music icon Bob Blackman talks about the folk music genre, how it has been defined and marketed, its roots, history, many forms, and commercial success. Blackman focuses on Anglo-American music with its Celtic roots and explains the origins of the music. He also describes how the music has evolved over centuries and uses lyrics and numerous musical excerpts to demonstrate his points. Blackman answers questions from the audience. - Michigan State University Music Librarian Mary Black Junttonen talks about R. Nathaniel Dett, Michigan resident and world renowned classical conductor and pianist. Junttonen relates how Dett, of African-Canadian and African-American decent, attended Oberlin College in Ohio, toured the world teaching and composing and eventually settled in Battle Creek, Michigan. Junttonen plays selections of Dett's compositions and explains his influence on American music. She also describes Dett materials held in the MSU Archives and other collections. She answers questions from the audience. Junttonen is introduced by MSU librarian Michael Rodriguez. Part of the Michigan State University Libraries' Colloquia series. - First Lady Michelle Obama welcomes Smokey Robinson, John Legend, Berry Gordy, and Robert Santelli to the White House to lead a youth workshop on the legacy and history of Motown Records. Santelli opens with a history of the Motown era and Gordy reflects on first being a boxer and his start in music. Robinson describes growing up in the same neighborhood as Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and they all discuss becoming associated with Motown, launching their careers, writing songs, and how groups were started. They take questions and John Legend sings a Stevie Wonder song.

- Lansing Community College student Michael Venyah talks about his African born father and his mother who is from Alabama, and their respective professions and his high school experience which included dealing with racism and charges of plagiarism. Venyah says that he does not aspire to a middle-class lifestyle and that money doesn't mean that much to him. He compares college in the U.S. and England, describes his approach to life, his ability to be objective, his love of performing music, and not being driven to conform to any traditional definitions of success as he pursues a degree in English and writing. Venyah also reads two of his poems. Part of the series "Generation X: The Hopes and Dreams of College Students," produced and recorded by Robert F. Crawford.

- Michigan State University Professor of Musicology Carol Hess delivers a talk entitled, "Alberto Ginastera and the Cold War: a 'Musical MacNamara' in the United States". Hess talks about American music in the broadest sense including music and influences from all the Americas, North, South and Central. She highlights the career of Ginastera, layers in the works of Carlos Chavez and Heitor Villa-Lobos, and explains how it was affected by anti-nationalist sentiments during the Cold War. She plays short samples of the music. Hess is introduced by MSU Librarian Mary Black Junttonen. Part of the Michigan State University Libraries' Colloquia Series. Held at the MSU Main Library.

- In part three of the Michigan Writers Series event "Music History: Dramatizing the African American Experience", playwright Sandra Seaton joins cast members and Michigan State University faculty members for a question and answer session following a dramatic reading of scenes from her play "Music History" and a panel discussion of themes presented in her work. Participants discuss the historical context of the play, music and culture, the civil rights movement and the creative process. Brian Collins from the MSU Alumni Association also explains how new technology can augment classroom instruction. Held at the MSU Main Library.
