- Elmira Morris Smith (1847-1909) was the first wife of James Wilson Smith, the proprietor of the Hotel St. James. They were married in 1867.

- Letter from H. P. Barringer to J. K. Failing of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Written on stationery from the Hotel St. James in Rochester. Stationery has photograph of the hotel and envelope is included. Originally the Lambertson House when it was built in 1847 by John V. Lambertson, this wooden structure became the Hotel St. James when it was purchased by James Wilson Smith in 1892. Located at the southwest corner of Main Street and Fifth Street (University Drive), the hotel operated until the 1930s and was eventually torn down in 1962 after falling into disrepair.
