The primary copy has bolder colors and is mounted on beige cardstock. The secondary copy has lighter colors, and includes the title, "'The Heart of Detroit' - Reproduced from Photograph," as well as the notation, " Jos. Mack, Printer, Detroit." Both versions include captions below labeling the Post Office, City Hall, Pardridge and Blackwell in the Majestic Building, the Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Merrill Fountain, and the Opera House. A sign reading, "Welcome National Hay Association" is posted on the front of City Hall. The moonlight tower in front of City Hall on the corner of Woodward Avenue and Michigan Avenue is visible. Electric streetcars, horse-drawn carriages, and pedestrians are on the streets below. The photo was taken from an elevated position across Campus Martius, looking southwest, down Fort Street. Horse-drawn streetcars and their tracks are visible along both Woodward and Fort. City Hall and the base of the moonlight tower in front of it are visible on the right. At the left is the Hammond Building, draped in banners and indicated with a blue "X," and the Bagley Memorial Fountain. "Left side Detroit City Hall - (Mother's bank marked X.)" handwritten on verso.

In view are many pedestrians, the Bagley Memorial Fountain, Hammond Building, Post Office, and City Hall. Signs read "Pere Marquette", "Canadian Pacific", and "D & C Lines". Printed on verso: Fort Street West is one of the leading business thoroughfares of Detroit. It connects the heart of the city with the immense manufacturing establishments in Delray. Cars leave its foot of Woodward Avenue for Woodmere, the Fort Wayne Barracks, Delray, Ecorse, Wyandotte, Trenton, Monroe, and Toledo. Handwritten message on verso, postmarked Sep 6, 1909.

Woodmere, Brush, and Woodward line streetcars are in Campus Martius, including cars 386 and 290. A horse-drawn cart carrying several large potted ferns is on Ford Street beside City Hall's lawn. Several horse-drawn carriages are on Woodward in front of City Hall. A man in a white suit picks up horse droppings in the intersection of Woodward and Ford using a large scoop and a shovel. A moonlight tower stands on the south corner of Woodward and Michigan Avenue. Signs for C.A. Shafer are posted on the side of the Majestic Building. A mimeographed caption is on the verso, along with an impression of a photo of William C. Maybury: This picture was taken in the central business portion of the city of Detroit from a window of a hotel known as the Russell House.. The hotel is situated on the South East corner of Woodward Avenue and Cadillac Square. The photograph is made from a negative taken in the fall of 1900 and is a fairly good representation of exterior photography, at this date. The photograph was made by C.M. Hayes and Co., a firm engaged in general photography.
