- German soldiers and prisoners stand on a street in the prison compound in Stralkowo. Wooden barracks line the street and tall utility poles stand in the middle of the thoroughfare. These barracks served as the quarters for the 2nd Reserves of the Landsturm, German troops that were assigned to provide security for the camp. Note the flower gardens which are carefully tended in front of each barrack. These gardens provided prisoners with some pastime to decorate the outside of their accommodations.

- French prisoners of war in wooden shoes wait to receive their dinner as they stand on a side street in the prison camp at Goettingen. Some POW's have their wash hanging out to dry. You can see the Bismarck Tower on top of the hill behind the barracks.

- British interrnees could participate in a full orchestra in the prison camp at Ruhleben. Among the prisoners there were a number of accomplished musicians and composers. Concerts provided by the orchestra provided the camp population with a diversion from their problems and homesickness.

- Russian prisoners await their dinner outside of their barracks at Wasbek. The meal consists of soup, found in the large pots on the ground with ladles on top. A German non-commissioned officer stands in the center of the group with a ladle in hand, ready to begin distributing the meal. German officers stand in the background at the left.

- British civilian internees participated in competitions to improve the appearance of the camp by cultivating gardens. This garden is outside of Barrack 5 at the prison camp at Ruhleben.

- Russian prisoners stand at the entrance to their earthen barrack at Hammerstein in 1914. These barracks offered few windows, which limited ventilation, but prevented the escape of heat, a major consideration during the long, cold winters of eastern Germany. This particular building was a temporary facility which held prisoners while permanent barracks were constructed.

- While many of the high-ranking Polish Legion officers remained in captivity, these prisoners were discharged from the prison camp at Bustyahaza on 31 March 1918. The signing of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk ended the fighting on the Eastern Front and temporarily established the regency in Warsaw as the legitimate Polish government.

- French Alpine troops, an elite army unit, enjoy a lunch of soup at a table inside their barrack at Wetzlar. Two POW's would go to the camp kitchen to fetch the dinner pot and then distribute the rations to the men in the barracks.

- Photograph of the interior of a barrack, probably housing French prisoners, in the prison camp at Minden. As demonstrated by the property hanging on the walls of the dormitory, POW's brought few possessions with them into captivity. Conditions were cramped, although POWs enjoyed individual beds at Minden instead of double- or triple-decked bunks constructed in other camps.
