Rex E. Schlaybaugh Jr. Collection

Description:
This small collection documents the formative years of Rex E. Schlaybaugh, Jr., who grew up in Lansing, Michigan. Schlaybaugh was the son of Rex Sr., who had served in World War II and then entered the real estate business with his father Ralph "Jack" Schlaybaugh. Rex Jr. was an athlete at Sexton High School who went on to Albion College and a long career at Lansing's Board of Water and Light. The majority of this collection is a large scrapbook or baby book that begins with snapshots of Rex Jr. when he was a toddler. Various personal memorabilia such as elementary school prize ribbons and schoolwork, newspaper clippings, correspondence, certificates, and many snapshots from early years through high school and perhaps into college are included. Some items have become loose or were never attached and have been moved to folders. Rex Jr. attended Verlinden Elementary School, West Junior High School, and Sexton High School, graduating in 1967. For some time in 1970 he seems to have served as an intern or volunteer for then-governor William Milliken. He served BWL for 32.59 years according to the plaque in this collection, and retired from there in 1981 This collection appears to have been an estate sale purchase by David Caterino, who then left the collection to the Capital Area District Libraries.
