Detroit Fire Department active duty certificate, engraved by Capewell and Kimmel, and issued to Andrew Werbecht on July 31, 1854

Description:
Detroit Fire Department active duty certificate, engraved by Capewell and Kimmel, and issued to Andrew Werbecht on July 31, 1854. The document bears the signatures of President Jerome Croul, Treasurer Alexander Paton, and Secretary Benjamin Vernor, beside a corroded metallic embossed Fire Department of the City of Detroit seal. Illustrations, purportedly hand colored by Robert Hopkin, of uniformed firefighters, an early fire apparatus and firefighting equipment, the seal of the State of Michigan, and Neptune flanked by two winged monsters are bordered by scrollwork. The number "12" has been added to the helmets of the firefighters and to the apparatus, likely indicating Werbecht's involvement in Woodbridge Fire Company No. 12. The certificate is mounted on linen.
