Description:
Color postcard depicting an elevated view along Central Avenue on Belle Isle at night. The street is crowded with pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles. In the foreground is a round flowerbed. Printed on verso: Central Avenue, Belle Isle, Detroit, Mich. Belle Isle Park contains about 700 acres and has cost Detroit including bridge leading to it about $2,000,000. It has beautiful lawns and Floral displays, also many miles of driveways and canals. It has a Zoo, Horticultural Building and Aquarium. Refreshments are served at both Casino and Pavillion. It was bought from the Chippewa and Ottawa Indians for eight Barrels of rum, three rolls of tobacco, six pounds of vermillion and a belt of wampum, by Lieutenant Mc Dougall in 1769. In 1879, 110 years afterward it was sold to Detroit for $200,000. Handwritten message on verso, postmarked Oct 31, 1917.
