- Documentary filmmaker Peter Davis talks about his career, and his work to end Apartheid in South Africa. Peter Limb, MSU Libraries Area Studies Librarian, interviews Davis. Davis recalls his youth in London during WWII, university, teaching, and his move to film production. He explains how he became associated with Citizens Association for Racial Equality (C.A.R.E.) and developed an interest in Africa. Davis also describes film making in South Africa, the Soweto Uprising, his relationship with the Mandelas, and his efforts to preserve South African films. Part of the African Studies Interview Series sponsored by the MSU Libraries and the African Studies Center.

- Antique automobile restoration expert Dan Shafarman talks about his interest in REO motor cars and his difficult search for parts to fix a REO Royale. Shafarman also talks about his life before coming to the Lansing, MI area in 1969, mass production techniques in the auto industry, bad working conditions in the early car factories, Henry Ford’s hiring and pay practices, corporate paternalism, and the "novel" idea of paying workers enough to afford to buy the products they built. Recorded as part of the commemoration of REO Motor Car Company’s 100th Anniversary.

- Dr. Laurie Sommers, professor of music and folklore ethnomusicology at Michigan State University, presents, "Songs of miners, lumberjacks and schooner men : Alan Lomax's Michigan legacy." Dr. Sommers delves into the history of Michigan's folk songs and their preservation, focusing on the work of Alan Lomax. Dr. Sommers is introduced by MSU Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series co-sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the MSU Museum. Held in the MSU Museum Auditorium.

- Doug Bernard hosts the Voice of America radio show "Talk to America" features a newly discovered live recording of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. Larry Applebaum, Library of Congress senior studio engineer, talks about stumbling upon the November 29, 1957 recording which pairs Monk's quartet with Coltrane, performing for VOA. Applebaum explains the process of digitizing and preserving old analog recordings and the quality and value of this particular recording. Michael Grey, chief VOA librarian, explains the history of the concert which was hosted by VOA jazz expert Willis Conover. John Shaw, assistant head of the G. Robert Vincent Voice Library of the Michigan State University Libraries, talks about the process of digitizing and cataloging audio material and about the difficulties in recovering sound from old recording formats. Participants answer questions from callers. Excerpts of the Monk and Coltrane recording are played.
