- Document signed by Austin Blair, Governor, James B. Porter, Secretary of State, and John Robertson, Adjutant General, appointing Russell A. Alger a captain in the Michigan Militia. Full text of the document is as follows: "Austin Blair, Governor in and over the State of Michigan, To all who shall see these Presents, Greeting: Know ye, That, reposing special trust and confidence in the Patriotism, Valor, Ability and Fidelity of Russell A. Alger in the name and by the authority of the People of the State of Michigan, I do hereby appoint him a Captain in the Second Cavalry Regiment, ___ Brigade, ___ Division, in the Militia of said State; to rank as such from the Second day of September eighteen hundred and Sixty One. He is therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the duties of Captain by doing and performing all things thereunto belonging. And I do strictly charge and Require all Officers and Soldiers under his command to be obedient to his orders as Captain. And he is to observe and follow such orders and directions, from time to time, as he shall receive from the President of the United States of America, from the Governor of the State of Michigan, or the General or other Superior Officers set over him, according to the rules and disciplines of War. This Commission to continue in force during the pleasure of the Governor of the State of Michigan, for the time being. In Testimony Whereof, I have caused these Letters to be made patent, and the Great Seal of the State to be hereunto affixed. Given under my hand, at Lansing, this Second day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Sixty One and of the Independence of the United States of America the Eighty Fifth. 12. Deed
- Description:
- Deed. Deed, signed by President James Madison, and Secretary of State James Monroe grant landing to Abijah and Jesse Hunt, bearing the Great Seal of the United States, embossed in white: James Madison, President of the United States of America To all to whom these presents shall come, greetings: Know ye, that Abijah and Jefse Hunt having lodged in the Treasury, a certificate of the register of the Land-office of Detroit, whereby it appears that the said Abijah and Jefse Hunt are confirmed by the virtue of an act of Congress, entitled "An act regulating the grants of land in the territory of Michigan," in their claim to a certain tract of land, containing six hundred eighteen and 26/100ths acres, situate on the border of River Raisins (sic) bounded and describes as follows, to wit: Beginning at a post standing on the south border of River Raisins, between this tract and a tract confirmed to the claimants; thence south nineteen degrees, west, one hundred ninety one chains sixty one links to a post, thence north seventy one degrees west, thirty two chains, thirty seven links to a post; thence north nineteen degrees east, one hundred ninety chains, thirty nine links to a post standing on the border of the river Raisins, between this tract and a tract confirmed to H.F. Lafselle; thence along the border of said river down stream, south sixty seven degrees, east, thirteen chains twenty two links; thence south eighty seven degrees, east, fifteen chains, thence south fifty two degrees, east, five chains, ten links to the place of the beginning. There is granted by the United States, unto the said Abijah and Jefse Hunt the tract or parcel of land above described; to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land, with the appurtenances, unto the said Abijah and Jefse Hunt heirs and assigns forever. In testimony whereof, I have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and the Seal of the United States to be hereunto affixed. Give under my hand at the city of Washington, the twentieth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eleven and of the Independence of the United States of America, the thirty-fifth. 13. John J. Bagley
- Description:
- One certificate issued as a Resolution by the Board of Councilmen of the City of Detroit to honor the late Governor John J. Bagley whose estate was "Presenting to the City of Detroit a Free Public Drinking Fountain of Ice Water for the People." The Resolution was passed on June 17, 1887, by Councilmen Beggs, Champion, Conahan, McCarthy, McLaughlin, Moran, Petz, Streeter, Tuite, Pridgeon, and President Pro Tem, Hon. Thomas Berry. The Board of Aldermen approved a concurring resolution on June 21, 1887. The certificate was signed at the bottom by M. H. Chamberlain, Mayor, and Wm. T. Dust, City Clerk, on August 18, 1887. An embossed paper seal was affixed to the certificate near the lower left corner. The certificate has drawings of flowers, a waterfall, and stream with cattle along the perimeter. The artist's signature, "J. Owen, 1887," is shown in the lower left corner.

15. Gen. U. S. Grant
- Description:
- One certificate issued as a Resolution by the Board of Aldermen of the City of Detroit, Michigan, to mourn the recent death of General Ulysses S. Grant. The Resolution indicated that "city hall be appropriately draped with suitable symbols of mourning, that the public offices be closed, and the city hall bell be tolled during the hours of the funeral." The Resolution was passed on July 28, 1885, by Aldermen Alter, Barbour, Baumann, Chase, Fairbairn, Falvey, Finney, Gies, Griffin, Hartness, Heck, Jackson, Jacob, Kronberg, Lemmer, Littlefield, Loomer, Moloney, Nagel, O'Reilly, Stapleton, Sweeney, Westcott, Wieser, Wilcox, and the President, Hon. Augustus Kaiser. Councilmen present included Berry, Champion, Conahan, Dust, Goebel, Look, McGrath, Phelps, Raynor, Rentz, Streeter, and President, Hon. Marvin H. Chamberlain. The Resolution was signed by Alex. A. Saenger, City Clerk, on August 1, 1885. An embossed gold seal and ribbon are attached at the lower left corner of the certificate. (Ulysses S. Grant died on July 23, 1885, in Wilton, New York.) Handwritten pencil text on the verso shows "Presented to Captain Peter Ortwine, March 11th 1886." Peter Ortwine was the Captain of the Neptune Steam Fire Engine Company No. 2 which was located at the corner of St. Antoine and Larned Streets.
