- Both sides of Washington Avenue are seen in this photo taken across East Allegan Street, looking to the north. Several additional blocks can be seen to the north across Michigan Avenue, particularly the Bank of Lansing at 103 North Washington Avenue and the Tussing building at 106 West Ottawa Street. Of note on the west side of South Washington Avenue are the vacant storefront at 100, the Holly Lansing Grill at 104, Baker Shoes at 106, and S. S. Kresge department store at 114 South Washington Avenue. On the east side at right, the Morgan's Jewelers sidewalk clock, the Planters Peanuts sign of The Peanut Shop, and Rouser Rexall Drugs store. - The Knapp's building was "Knapp's Office Centre" from the 1980s to about 2000. The parking attendant booth is at Washtenaw Street end of the 200 block of South Washington Avenue, it was removed in 1989. Although the J. C. Penney department store building can been seen, no other stores are identifiable in the photo and it is unlikely that Penney's was still in operation at the time of the photo.

- The stores begin with Maurice Distinctive Apparel at 312-16, Sans Souci Shoppe at 318, Rackley Shoes at 320, Vogue women's clothing at 322, R & H Shoes at 324, and J. C. Penney department store at 330-334 South Washington Avenue. Arbaugh's department store, across Kalamazoo Street in the 400 block, is on the left side of the photo. - From Woolworth's department store at 200-204, Richman's Clothes at 206 and Linn Camera Shop at 210 are visible. The view also shows the east side of South Washington Avenue for the next several blocks to Arbaugh's at 401-425 South Washington Avenue.
