- Description:
- Communist party leader Carl Winter walks with a group of African Americans, carrying signs protesting the killing of Leon Mosely by a Detroit Police Officer in 1948. "The police problem burst back into public debate with the shooting death of a black teenager, Leon Mosely, in June 1948, some facts of the case were undisputed, Mosely stole a car and was joy riding when patrolman, Louis Melasi spotted his haphazard driving and gave chase, Mosely sped to get away, then crashed into a light pole, versions of what happened next differed, Melasi said Mosely got out of the car in a menacing fashion, then tried to flee, African-American witnesses said Mosely stepped out of the car too dazed to walk, Melasi beat him and then shot him when he tried to defend himself, a coroner's jury, sifting through the evidence a month after the incident, concluded that the killing was 'unnecessary, unwise and unjustifiable'," from Bridging the River of Hatred: The Pioneering Efforts of Detroit Police Commissioner, George Edwards by Mary M. Stolberg.

- Description:
- Striking MESA (Mechanics Educational Society of America) workers stand inside glass door to the Nash-Kelvinator plant in Detroit, Michigan, as three women stand outside looking at them. "The strike was typical of the middle-level sit-downs that occurred during the next eight weeks, the two thousand workers in the plants were already organized, the strike began when the company failed to act on grievances arising from "misunderstandings" at the Plymouth Road and Fort Street facilities, the union immediately added wage demands, on February 9, while great events were in the offing at the Statler, MESA picketers captured the office building as well, saying that the company harbored strike breakers in the office," from Maurice Sugar: Law, Labor, and the Left in Detroit 1912-1950, by Christopher H. Johnson.

- Description:
- Portrait of Gladys Sweet, wife of Ossian, an African American physician who became the center of a highly publicized murder trial. "Dr. Sweet, a graduate of Howard University Medical School, bought this two-story brick house in an all-white Detroit neighborhood in 1925, on July 14, the neighborhood's residents protested his plans to move in and stated that they intended to retain what they called "the present high standards of the neighborhood," on September 8, Dr. Sweet, his wife, and nine gun-carrying associates moved into the house under police escort, the next night a large crowd of whites began pelting the house with rocks and bottles; they then rushed the house, a volley of gunshots issued forth from the second story windows, killing one man and seriously wounding another, the Detroit police arrested Dr. Sweet and his companions and charged them with first-degree murder, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) hired Clarence Darrow, America's most famous lawyer after his defense of evolution in the Scopes Monkey Trial, to defend Dr. Sweet, after 26 hours of deliberation, the jury returned without a verdict, Judge Frank Murphy, later to become governor of Michigan and a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, declared a mistrial and released Dr. Sweet, subsequent trials upheld the right of Sweet and his companions, regardless of race, to protect life and property in dangerous situations," from the National Park Service website.

- Description:
- View of buildings on the corner of Fifth and Plum streets in Detroit, Michigan. "[Robert] Cobb discovered Elton Park downtown between Michigan Avenue.,the Lodge and the Fisher Freeways, upon seeing the old buildings on Plum St. he envisioned an Artist Community with shops, theaters and restaurants, slowly he began buying buildings, he met Sherman Shapiro, then a 57-year-old real estate developer, and they became partners, they ended up owning most of the buildings on Plum St. between Fourth and Fifth ... Cobb and Shapiro knew they were taking a gamble with the location of Plum St. they'd have to draw primarily on the Central Business District and tourists for customers, the people who were attracted to Plum Street were loitering college kids from Wayne State and the University of Michigan, at first the businesses welcomed the hippies hanging out, to help create an image, the merchants became upset after realizing the hippies were harassing customers for money and not spending it in the shops, the area became known for drug dealing and later motorcycle gangs, which scared away customers ... at one time there were 43 shops in the Plum St. district, in 1969, three years after the opening, only 6 to 8 shops remained," from Detroit News article.

- Description:
- View of the Detroit Free Press building designed by architect, Albert Kahn located on Lafayette Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan. "In 1923 Kahn built a new headquarters for the Detroit Free Press ... since rental space was included in the building, it was of necessity larger than the News building, hence steel construction was preferable to the bulkier reinforced concrete, but the same use of monumental limestone on the exterior was continued, a new element may be noted, however, in the massing of the building in a central thirteen-story tower with lower six-story wings," from "The Buildings of Detroit: A History," by W. Hawkins Ferry.
