1. Ingham County Tax Ledgers

Description:: This is a collection of 26 volumes of tax records for various locations in Ingham County, dating from 1907 to 1939 with many gaps. Communities represented include the townships of Lansing, Leroy, Delhi, Vevay, Wheatfield, White Oak, Alaiedon, Bunker Hill, Ingham, Meridian, and Locke, as well as towns of Leslie, Mason, East Lansing, Dansville, Stockbridge, Williamston, and Onondaga. Rural/unincorporated areas (identified as plats or farms) around greater Lansing and the county are also included. In most cases information is listed by legal description of the land parcel, usually by plat or subdivision, so a search for a particular individual can be time consuming. The ledger volumes are large, very dusty, and often in poor condition. All of the records are handwritten. None of the volumes have been digitized or indexed. They can be accessed in the Local History Room. 2. Stebbins Real Estate Collection

Description:: This collection consists of nearly 400 boxes of real estate listing cards and other material for addresses throughout the greater Lansing area, including both commercial and residential properties. It was created in the course of business by the Advance Realty Co. of Lansing, founded by C. Rowland Stebbins. Records make up two series: standard (card) files, and large files. The 4" x 6" card format was a common way real estate listings were recorded and shared by agencies, especially in the 1950s and beyond with the advent of simple card and photo printing systems. Large files are similar but sometimes include rough sketches of a property or a neighborhood section, correspondence, and/or larger newspaper clippings, with most material on 8 1/2" x 11" office paper as opposed to the smaller cards. Materials are organized by street address. A typical address file will include at least one of the following: -Photograph of property -Negative (usually Kodak Brownie format) of property -Sales listing card or sheet, detailing the structure, lot, location, any notes on showing the property for agents, notes on sale price and date. The 4" x 6" sales listing cards usually have a half-tone photograph of the property on the reverse. -Newspaper clippings (classified advertisements or articles) -Sales agent solicitation records -Rental property information -Vacant property information Occasionally odd items such as a housekey have been found in the files. The material was created and maintained by the Advance Realty Co. of Lansing. Advance was founded by C. Rowland "Rollie" Stebbins, the grandson of Cortland B. Stebbins, who was an editor of the Lansing Republican newspaper as early as 1857. The Stebbins family was prominent in Lansing business and local government for several generations.

3. Belon Real Estate Collection

Description:: This collection consists of 49 boxes of real estate listing cards and other material for addresses throughout the greater Lansing area, including both commercial and residential properties. It was created in the course of business by the Belon Realty Co. of Lansing, founded by owner and broker George T. Belon in 1952. It was in existence at least until 1998, but the records in this collection end in about 1970. The 4" x 6" multi listing card format was a common way real estate listings were recorded and shared by agencies, especially in the 1950s and beyond with the advent of simple card and photo printing systems. Materials are organized by street address. For the most part this collection is limited to a property listing card with a photo of varying quality printed on the back, but occasionally there are negatives (usually duplicating the house photos printed on respective cards), some handwritten notes and correspondence, or other items. Many cards have inaccurate designations of "Street," "Road," "Avenue," "Court," etc., and some have incorrectly spelled street names. We have corrected these in the descriptions and file names where possible. Each street is generally treated as an item in this collection with its own database record. Note that streets are sometimes divided into multiple files for direction (N/S/E/W), or if a street runs through more than one community. These files are being added to Local History Online as materials are digitized. This collection is complementary to the <a href="http://cadl.pastperfectonline.com/archive/ED4AE10E-B0EA-4B4B-820E-622451796401">Stebbins Real Estate Collection</a> at CADL as well as a number of other resources useful for property research in the greater Lansing area.

4. Elmer Collection

Description:: This is a collection of the papers of Jackson K. Elmer and family. Elmer was born in New York in 1840, and moved to Michigan in 1853 after the death of his father. He spent most of his adult life in Mason. He was married to Mary E. Bond in 1866, and they had a daughter Dora D. Elmer. Both his wife and daughter's correspondence and other materials including schoolwork and text books are part of this collection. Elmer was initially involved in carpentry and construction after learning the trade following public school in Rome, Michigan. He operated a carpentry and building business in partnership with a half brother Lyman W. Baker. He also served for the Union in the Civil War, first enlisting as a sergeant and then receiving promotions to second lieutenant, first lieutenant, and adjutant. There is significant correspondence with military organizations and friends, and other paperwork related to his military service. There are several warranty deeds for a piece of land in Ingham County between Mason and Lansing along the "State Road" which may have been where the Elmer, Baker, & Co. construction business or his future endeavors in mercantile, coal, and grocery was located. Elmer also owned 80 acres in Section 6, Aurelius Township, which he managed but never farmed himself. The collection also includes a large number of calling cards, carte de visite photographs and other portraits and photographs, as well as small ledgers, travel diaries, and account books. One of the earliest account books is for the Primary School Interest Fund account that was kept at the Bank of Michigan for 1839-1841, which was probably not Elmer's personal record. He used blank pages later in the volume for his household and Elmer & Baker business accounting and drafts of correspondence. This reuse of items is common in the collection, especially in bound volumes.
