- Description:
- "This school building, which replaced the smaller "Pinkney" School, was built between September 1865 and September 1866 and cost about $800.00. It was constructed entirely of oak from the walls to the ridgepole. Even the desks and benches were of oak, having been made by a cabinet maker of the village by the name of A.M. Decker. Because of the oak construction and the fact it was the first school in the township to boast a bell it was called Bell Oak School, a name which later spread to the village. It was in use until about 1898 when it was replaced by the building that was recently razed. This picture was taken in the early 1870s, probably 1871 or 1872. Note that the land behind the building to the north was still wooded, uncleared land. The only person identified in the pcture is the one marked with an X - George Pickney. George's parents lived directly across the road to the west from the school, and when George learned that they were to have their picture taken, he rushed home to change his clothes so he would look his best. But in the hustle-bustle and confusion, he couldn't find his suspenders, and if you look real close you can see that he is holding up his pants with his hands." --Donna Heminger

- Description:
- This is a collection of Lansing and regional photographic prints and negatives assembled by David Caterino. Image subjects represent a wide cross-reference of people, buildings, scenery, and events. Most are identified. They have been grouped into 27 subject series (list below) that were established by the collector. Series 27, Lansing Photographers, consists mainly of unidentified studio portraits gathered primarily to identify early Lansing photographers. The subjects of the photographs in those boxes is less significant than the photographers' stamps on cabinet cards and other formats. Most of the information is complementary to research published by David V. Tinder, available online here.

Photos are a part of the "Visual Views of the Elementary Schools in the Lansing School District" project of the Lansing Area Community Resources Workshop in cooperation with Michigan State University. It was compiled by Priscilla L. Shaver who was a teacher at Lewton School. The director was Frances B. Schneider. Each included school has a photo of the school building and playground. The album was created to aid students who were being moved to new schools in the hopes that they could use it to know where their new school was and what it would look like. Priscilla Shaver attended the 1971 Lansing Area Community Resources Workshop to aid in assembling this project.

- Description:
- In "History and Growth of the Lansing Public Schools" (vol. 2, 1944-1962) by Anna L. Brewer, it is noted that the land this school occupied was purchased in 1892. A two-room school named Lesher Place School opened there in September of that year for grades one through four. In 1895 its name was changed to East Park School, which can be seen in the white plaque above the door in this photograph. In 1916 the school was replaced with a new building. When the park across the street had its name changed to Oak Park in 1926, the school followed suit.

- Built 1963.
