- Description:
- "One of the first - This two-room frame school, built in 1870 in the 100 block of South Mill Street, cost $3,000. It was the original Larch Street School, preceding the brick structure erected in 1888. Pilgrim Congregational Church used this building for a time, starting in about 1893." According to Aldinger's "History and Growth of the Lansing Public Schools" (Vol. 1), the church bought this building in approximately 1888 or 1889. Then in 1892 the school district rented it back from the church to be used to accomodate its growing demands for the rest of that year.

- Students sit at desks reading while a teacher watches. Appears to be a French language class; all of the chalkboard writing and text on classroom posters is in French. Six slides were in a box labeled "Junior High School" (there were two other boxes in the set labeled "West Junior High School"). It is possible these were taken in the new Walter French Junior High School that was located at the southwest corner of Cedar Street and Mt. Hope Avenue, completed in September 1925. However, according to the 1925-1926 Directory of Public Schools, only the Senior High School had a French class that year, taught by G. Claude Graham. The age of the students in these slides appears to be more in line with high school-aged students.

It was compiled by Priscilla L. Shaver who was a teacher at Lewton School. The director was Frances B. Schneider. Each included school has a photo of the school building and playground. The album was created to aid students who were being moved to new schools in the hopes that they could use it to know where their new school was and what it would look like. Priscilla Shaver attended the 1971 Lansing Area Community Resources Workshop to aid in assembling this project.
