- Description:
- Black and white photographic print depicting the inside of the Dressler Kiln at the Champion Spark Plug Co. Caption on verso reads: Taken by the Carborundum Company 9-20-1921 - Showing interior of Dressler Kiln (The kiln had been in service for seven months - 2-4-1921 to 9-7-1921). Looking down the carbofrax B muffles in the same direction as the gases pass. This shows the amount of silica on the surface: also the condition of the joints. Unfortunately the picture is out of focus and does not show the joints as well as it should. However, they are very much better than they were in the case of the previous failure. The mortar used in these joints is a mixture of 80% carborundum 14 and finer, 20% clay, and in no case has attached the carborundum chambers. Previously a mixture of clay and alumina was used and altho the mortar was not attached the carborundum had been eaten away on both sides permitting leaks. These chambers were in the kiln not only during this burning but during the previous burning as well, this is, altogether about fourteen operating months.
