Garcia discusses the history and consequences of farm labor movements in the state of Washington, focusing specifically on the United Farm Workers organization, and explains the role immigration has on the mobilization of current farm labor movements. Garcia answers questions from the audience. The event is convened by professor John P. Beck from the Michigan State University School of Human Resources and Labor Relations.

President Obama discusses the executive orders he will be signing that day, including a pay freeze on senior White House staff salaries, strict limitations on lobbyists, and policies needed to make the government more trustworthy. After Obama signs the executive orders, Vice President Joe Biden leads the White House staff through the oath of office.

- In his third prime-time address to the American people, on election night, 1977, Carter talks about his energy policy, currently being debated in both House and Senate committees; cites startling facts, e.g., two years of food exports pay for only one year of oil imports; tells of canceling his overseas trip to see his legislation through; says the Japanese, British, Germans and French have all cut oil imports while U.S. imports have gone up by 40 percent; will offer economic incentives to the oil industry only for new oil; asks each American family to conserve. - Otto Aves talks about his career at REO Motor Car Company/Diamond-Reo Trucks, Inc., in Lansing, MI, from 1944 to 1972. Aves describes growing up on a Delta Township farm and following both of his parents into the plant. He also talks about building military vehicles without heaters and defrosters, trying to run the family farm while working double shifts, a wildcat strike over piece rate pay, conditions on the shop floor, building custom trucks for celebrities, and the tremendous influence of the UAW. He says that REO was much like a family and reminisces about REO picnics, outings at Lake Lansing, the REO Clubhouse, movies, bowling, and the ball teams. As in any family, he says, there were problems and he describes filing a shop grievance against his real-life father-in-law who also worked at REO. The interviewers are Shirley Bradley and Lisa Fine. - President Barack Obama delivers his second State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress. Obama talks about civility and the need for legislators to work together to insure that the U.S. can compete in a rapidly changing global economy. To sharpen the country's competitive edge, he calls for increased spending on education, infrastructure, clean energy technology, and high-speed Internet, while at the same time, in a nod to the burgeoning deficit, proposes a five-year freeze on domestic discretionary spending and a massive, cost cutting reorganization of the federal government. He also discuses health care, the tax code, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, national security, gays in the military, and immigration. Obama closes by saying that America is still a place where a person can rise from humble beginnings to achieve great things.
