- Michigan State University Professor of Educational Administration Gary Sykes delivers a talk entitled, "The Future of Education: School Choice Comes to Michigan", at the MSU Main Library. Sykes talks about these three prominent social questions discussed in America: how good or bad is the American educational system?; what kind of system do we want?; and what role should government play? He compares the decentralized education system in the U.S. with other very centralized systems in other countries. Sykes says that American schools are moving away from government control towards a system of regulated privatization and he explains how schools are funded in Michigan and how that model is radically changing. Questions from the audience follows. Sykes is introduced by librarian Ruth Ann Jones. Part of the Michigan State University Libraries' Colloquia Series.

- James Earl Ray, convicted for the assassination of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., testifies before the House Select Committee on Assassinations on the second of three days of hearings. Mark Lane, Ray's attorney, accuses the committee of switching documents. G. Robert Blakey comments on the delivery of paperwork to Mark Lane on the previous day. Louis Stokes (D-OH), Chairman of the Committee, questions Ray about the second rifle Ray purchased. Ray discusses his various aliases and says he knew almost nothing about King and that he was unaware King was staying in Camden. Stokes questions Ray on his location at the time of King's murder. Stokes reads from Memphis newspapers telling of King's intended itinerary and Ray claims to have been unaware of the papers' contents. Ray answers questions from Floyd Fithian (D-IN), about Ray's escape from the Missouri prison and his flight to Canada. Technical interruption of the broadcast signal at 4:34:38 until 4:35:14.

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) chairs the hearing and makes opening statements. Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) introduce Perry. Following his introductory remarks, Perry answers questions about comments he made during his presidential bid about ending the EPA and denying global warming. Perry also talks about nuclear waste disposal. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) asks Perry about funding for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (F-RIB) at Michigan State University.

Olson suggests that the Florida Supreme Court was arbitrary in its decision about which votes should be recounted. Gore's attorney David Boies argues that Florida law is clear that where voter intent can be discerned the vote should be counted.

- Photographer Diana Matar delivers a talk entitled, "Evidence: Photography and Political Disappearance." Speaking from a slideshow (not included), Matar presents her documentation of the disappearance of her father-in-law, a Libyan opposition leader, taken by the Gaddafi regime and never seen again. Matar explains how she came to the project, how she approached photographing a person who was not physically there, and the larger significance of the project as a comment on human rights. She frequently pauses her talk to allow the audience to contemplate the images. Matar talks about making the body of work and assembling the content. She answers questions from the audience. Matar is introduced by MSU Professor of Photography & Visual Communication Howard Bossen. University Librarian Mary Jo Zeter convenes the event.
