- Mildred Alspaugh, daughter, sister and wife of REO Motor Car/Diamond-Reo Truck, Inc employees, talks about the company and her life in a REO workers family in Lansing, MI. Alspaugh tells of her father bringing home his "piece count pay slips" so that she could tally his earnings, of going to the REO Clubhouse as a child, listening to the REO Band, and watching the company ball teams. Alspaugh says that her husband died at the plant after forty years on the job and that other workers collected money to give to her and her children. The interviewers are Shirley Bradley and Lisa Fine. Recorded as part of the REO Memories oral history project.

Johnson sets an ambitious agenda for the congress suggesting they need to do more for civil rights, cut taxes, declare "all out war on human poverty," and recognize the health needs of older citizens, while reducing Federal spending. Johnson describes a need to improve education for all, build more hospitals and more libraries, improve housing, provide for old age, and increase employment. He calls for new civil rights laws, changes to immigration policy, and more free trade.

The historical novel, by Laila Lalami, is an imagined memoir of the life of the first black explorer of the Americas, Mustafa al-Zamori, a Moroccan slave whose story was left out of the historical record. Tarakji prepares the audience to discuss the book. MSU Librarian Deborah Margolis convenes the event and introduces Tarakji.
