- Description:
- After the Rochester Pavilion Hotel burned down in 1877, this site sat vacate for nearly 10 years. In 1888, R.O. Smith built this two-story brick hotel, called the Sidney House. In 1895, William Bowman renamed the business the Detroit Hotel, which it remained until it was destroyed by fire in 1927. Caption on postcard lists F.E. Arnold as the proprietor. - Barkham Mill was located on the west side of Main Street at First Street, on the Clinton River. It was built in 1837 by Johnson Niles and was originally known as Old South Grist Mill. The business changed hands several times and was acquired by Steven W. Barkham and Beal Barkham in 1903. The mill was destroyed by fire in December 1927.
