- Description:
- Communist party leader Carl Winter walks with a group of African Americans, carrying signs protesting the killing of Leon Mosely by a Detroit Police Officer in 1948. "The police problem burst back into public debate with the shooting death of a black teenager, Leon Mosely, in June 1948, some facts of the case were undisputed, Mosely stole a car and was joy riding when patrolman, Louis Melasi spotted his haphazard driving and gave chase, Mosely sped to get away, then crashed into a light pole, versions of what happened next differed, Melasi said Mosely got out of the car in a menacing fashion, then tried to flee, African-American witnesses said Mosely stepped out of the car too dazed to walk, Melasi beat him and then shot him when he tried to defend himself, a coroner's jury, sifting through the evidence a month after the incident, concluded that the killing was 'unnecessary, unwise and unjustifiable'," from Bridging the River of Hatred: The Pioneering Efforts of Detroit Police Commissioner, George Edwards by Mary M. Stolberg.

12510. Strikes; Meat; Hamtramck
- Description:
- Group of primarily women and children stand in front of a restaurant in Hamtramck, Michigan, with banners and picket signs, some reading, "Join the fight for a 20% reduction in meat prices" and "Strike, 20% reduction in meat prices." "On July 27, 1935, Polish and Black housewives began to picket Hamtramck butcher shops, carrying signs demanding a 20 percent price cut throughout the city and an end to price gouging in Black neighborhoods, when men, taunted by onlookers who accused them of being "scared by a few women," attempted to cross the lines, they were "seized by the pickets...their faces slapped, their hair pulled and their packages confiscated...a few were knocked down and trampled," that night Hamtramck butchers reported unhappily that the boycott had been 95 percent effective," from U.S. Women in Struggle: A Feminist Studies Anthology, by Claire Goldberg Moses and Heidi I. Hartmann.

- Description:
- Striking MESA (Mechanics Educational Society of America) workers stand inside glass door to the Nash-Kelvinator plant in Detroit, Michigan, as three women stand outside looking at them. "The strike was typical of the middle-level sit-downs that occurred during the next eight weeks, the two thousand workers in the plants were already organized, the strike began when the company failed to act on grievances arising from "misunderstandings" at the Plymouth Road and Fort Street facilities, the union immediately added wage demands, on February 9, while great events were in the offing at the Statler, MESA picketers captured the office building as well, saying that the company harbored strike breakers in the office," from Maurice Sugar: Law, Labor, and the Left in Detroit 1912-1950, by Christopher H. Johnson.

- Description:
- Women dance together outside General Motors plant 1, during the Flint sit-down strike. "The Flint sit-down strike began the evening of Dec. 30, 1936, when the night shift stopped the loading of dies being shipped by the company to places where unionism was weaker, the union had noticed that the sit-down method of protest, which had started in Europe, seemed to work successfully, so the workers sat down and locked themselves in, trying to protect their jobs from being removed ... the union called for supporters to gather at Cadillac Square in Detroit as a show of strength, the overflowing crowd of 150,000 supporters surprised even the union sympathizers and gave the union the self-confidence they needed to show its power and solidarity over its management "oppressors," other union workers joined in sympathy strikes, closing plants in other states ... the dramatic military style battles depict the times and the desperation of those involved, the outcome much later in time proved that both the union and the company could coexist and indeed prosper beyond anyone's expectations, those who made the cars could finally afford to buy them, pouring profits back to the stockholders, spreading the wealth caused more to be created, the pension and wages won by the workers raised the standard of living for the whole country," from The historic 1936-37 Flint auto plant strikes, by Vivian M. Baulch and Patricia Zacharias / The Detroit News.

- Description:
- Portrait of Gladys Sweet, wife of Ossian, an African American physician who became the center of a highly publicized murder trial. "Dr. Sweet, a graduate of Howard University Medical School, bought this two-story brick house in an all-white Detroit neighborhood in 1925, on July 14, the neighborhood's residents protested his plans to move in and stated that they intended to retain what they called "the present high standards of the neighborhood," on September 8, Dr. Sweet, his wife, and nine gun-carrying associates moved into the house under police escort, the next night a large crowd of whites began pelting the house with rocks and bottles; they then rushed the house, a volley of gunshots issued forth from the second story windows, killing one man and seriously wounding another, the Detroit police arrested Dr. Sweet and his companions and charged them with first-degree murder, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) hired Clarence Darrow, America's most famous lawyer after his defense of evolution in the Scopes Monkey Trial, to defend Dr. Sweet, after 26 hours of deliberation, the jury returned without a verdict, Judge Frank Murphy, later to become governor of Michigan and a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, declared a mistrial and released Dr. Sweet, subsequent trials upheld the right of Sweet and his companions, regardless of race, to protect life and property in dangerous situations," from the National Park Service website.

"The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, a landmark on Belle Isle, has been in operation on the island since its inception in 1904, designed by Albert Kahn and modeled after Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, the Conservatory occupies a 13-acre parcel of land fronted by formal perennial gardens and lily pond garden tucked into its north side, a major renovation took place during the early 1950s when its wood frame was replaced with a skeleton of iron and aluminum, Mrs. Anna Scripps Whitcomb bequeathed her 600-plant orchid collection to the City of Detroit and the Conservatory and, in grateful appreciation for the Scripps family generosity, the Conservatory was named for her in 1955," from the Belle Isle Botanical Society's website.

- Three people stand at concession stand inside the Fox Theater on Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. "The crowning achievement of Crane's career in Detroit was the Fox Theater on Woodward Avenue, seating over five thousand people, it outdistanced all other movie palaces in the city in the magnitude of its proportions, the vast auditorium, unobstructed by columns, was a marvel of engineering, but the aspect that elicited the most unbridled panegyrics from the press at the time of the opening in 1928 was the fantastic magnificence of the decor," from "The Buildings of Detroit: a History" by W. Hawkins Ferry. The Fox Theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and designated a National Historical Landmark in 1989.
