- Description:
- View of buildings on the corner of Fifth and Plum streets in Detroit, Michigan. "[Robert] Cobb discovered Elton Park downtown between Michigan Avenue.,the Lodge and the Fisher Freeways, upon seeing the old buildings on Plum St. he envisioned an Artist Community with shops, theaters and restaurants, slowly he began buying buildings, he met Sherman Shapiro, then a 57-year-old real estate developer, and they became partners, they ended up owning most of the buildings on Plum St. between Fourth and Fifth ... Cobb and Shapiro knew they were taking a gamble with the location of Plum St. they'd have to draw primarily on the Central Business District and tourists for customers, the people who were attracted to Plum Street were loitering college kids from Wayne State and the University of Michigan, at first the businesses welcomed the hippies hanging out, to help create an image, the merchants became upset after realizing the hippies were harassing customers for money and not spending it in the shops, the area became known for drug dealing and later motorcycle gangs, which scared away customers ... at one time there were 43 shops in the Plum St. district, in 1969, three years after the opening, only 6 to 8 shops remained," from Detroit News article.

- Description:
- Violence erupts between auto workers during the strike against Ford Motor Company. "On April 1, 1941, Ford fired eight workers at the Ford plant for union activity, word spread throughout the Ford empire, and slowly 50,000 workers stopped working, the first Ford strike had begun, on April 10, Henry Ford reluctantly agreed to permit a vote on the union issue, the workers voted overwhelmingly for a union, the UAW drew up an agreement setting the conditions between workers and the company, but Ford refused to sign, finally, Mrs. Ford stepped in, tired of all the fighting and turmoil, she told her husband to sign the agreement or she would leave him, Ford realized that his stubbornness would cost him a lot more than money, Ford and the workers signed the agreement and the triumphant Ford employees returned to work," from Great Auto Makers and Their Cars, by Bob Italia.

- Large group of white people gather outside Detroit Fire station at Livernois and Walton to protest against the hiring of an African American fireman. "These two black firemen, Marvin White and Marcellus Taylor, had passed rigid civil-service examinations with high honors and had successfully completed the equally rigorous firemen's training school, despite their qualifications, however, 1,800 racist whites in the mostly-Polish area of the fire station signed and presented a petition to the fire commission asking them not to assign the black firemen to the stations in their neighborhood ... the fire commission rejected their request, so the petitioners went to the common council, who passed the buck to the mayor [Richard W. Reading], who in turn stood firm on his decision and informed the white petitioners that the two had passed the required rigid civil-service tests and that if they (the white petitioners) felt that the assignment of black firemen to a station in their neighborhood violated their civil rights, then they should take the issue to court," from Life for Us Is What We Make It: Building Black Community in Detroit, 1915-1945 by Richard Walter Thomas.
