- Description:
- Portrait of Benjamin Gaylord "Bennie" Oosterbaan, dressed in University of Michigan basketball uniform and holding a basketball. "One of the greatest athletes ever to wear a Michigan uniform, Oosterbaan dedicated a great part of his life to the Michigan football program. After taking over as head coach in 1948, he guided the Wolverines to a 9-0 mark and the national championship. For his efforts in that first season, Oosterbaan was named National Coach of the Year ... During his playing days, Oosterbaan became the first player in school history to earn All-America honors three times. He won nine varsity letters at Michigan in football, basketball and baseball - one of the few student athletes ever to achieve this honor. Following his graduation in 1928, he turned down contracts from professional baseball and football organizations in order to join the Michigan coaching staff," from Bentley Historical Library's website.

- Description:
- Portrait of legendary blues musician, B.B. King performing at the 1980 Montreux Detroit Jazz Festival. "Riley “B.B.” King has been called the “King of the Blues” and “Ambassador of the Blues,” and indeed he’s reigned across the decades as the genre’s most recognizable and influential artist, his half-century of success owes much to his hard work as a touring musician who consistently logged between 200 and 300 shows a year, through it all he’s remained faithful to the blues while keeping abreast of contemporary trends and deftly incorporating other favored forms - jazz and pop, for instance - into his musical overview ... as a guitarist, King is best-known for his single-note solos, played on a hollowbody Gibson guitar, King’s unique tone is velvety and regal, with a discernible sting, he’s known for his trilling vibrato, wicked string bends, and a judicious approach that makes every note count," from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum's website.

- Description:
- Portrait of James E. Scripps, former news reporter and publisher of the Detroit News. "In 1873, James E. Scripps decided to tap this growing class of working men and women by launching a new newspaper, The Evening News. He filled the paper with inexpensive advertising and instructed his reporters to write "like people talk," his competitors called The News "a cheap rag" and labeled his reporters "pirates," but Detroiters loved it, and it made Scripps rich ... in 1889, recognizing the demand by art-starved Detroiters, Scripps decided to buy and donate 70 European paintings to the Detroit museum, the most famous are Rubens' "Meeting of David and Abigail" and a tryptich by the Italian gothic artist Allegretto Nuzi, the value of the entire collection donated by Scripps was about $75,000, a considerable sum in those days ... Scripps had four children, daughter Ellen Warren Scripps (1863-1948) married George Gough Booth, who also worked at the newspaper and was involved in the founding of the Booth Newspaper chain, another daughter, Anna Virginia (1866-1953), married Edgar Bancroft Whitcomb ... a third daughter, Grace Messenger, married Rex Brainard Clark, whose grandson Peter B. Clark was publisher of The Detroit News when it was acquired by the Gannett Co. Inc. in 1986, James Scripps' only son, William Edmund Scripps (1882-1952), married Nina Amenda Downey and had four children," from Detroit News article "James E. Scripps and Detroit's art museum," by Vivian M. Baulch.

- Portrait of Jerry Lee Lewis at the microphone. "Jerry Lee Lewis is the wild man of rock and roll, embodying its most reckless and high-spirited impulses, on such piano-pounding rockers from the late Fifties as “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and “Great Balls of Fire,” Lewis combined a ferocious, boogie-style instrumental style with rowdy, uninhibited vocals, he migrated to Memphis from Ferriday, Louisiana, where he’d grown up learning how to play piano by ear based on the music around him: Western swing, boogie-woogie, uptempo R&B and Delta blues. Lewis’ first influence was the country-blues sound of Jimmie Rodgers, although he also absorbed the gospel and R&B of the local black community," from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website.

- Description:
- Portrait of Detroit attorney Aaron Sapiro who in 1925 filed a libel lawsuit against Henry Ford and his newspaper The Dearborn Independent. "The Independent accused Aaron Sapiro, the movement’s leader, of defrauding American farmers to advance an international Jewish conspiracy. Ford saw himself as the only legitimate champion of rural America; he targeted Sapiro both because he was Jewish and because he was not a farmer ... Determined to silence Ford, Sapiro demanded a retraction. The paper replied with still more defamatory articles. In 1925, Sapiro filed a federal libel suit in Detroit, requesting $1 million in damages. For nearly two years, the defense tried fruitlessly to prove that the articles were true--the only way a publisher could evade responsibility for libel ... Reed and the Ford lawyers underestimated Sapiro and the strength of his case, and Marshall misjudged its potential for strengthening the civil rights claims of American Jews ... As the trial careened toward its end, Ford became desperate to end the suit and avoid taking the witness stand. He ordered his bodyguard, Harry Bennett, to secure a mistrial. Bennett planted an interview with a juror in a Detroit newspaper, producing the desired result. Ford then hurriedly dispatched emissaries to meet with Marshall, who agreed not only to mediate the conflict but also secretly to write Ford’s statement of apology. Having criticized Sapiro for bringing litigation that he believed would only reinforce racist stereotypes, Marshall made sure that Ford’s apology was directed not to Sapiro but to the Jewish people. Thus, though American law did not then recognize hate speech as such, Marshall got Ford to sign a public statement that did," from "Suing Henry Ford: America's First Hate Speech Case," by Victoria Saker Woeste at the American Bar Foundation's website.
