- Commentary and edition of the Milanese-Cistercian recension and the Bernardine recension of the twelfth-century Cistercian Hymnal tracing the evolution of Cistercian texts and melodies from the Molesme-Cistercian Hymnal through the early twelfth century, when the Cistercian hymnal attained its medieval form. The hymnal was used until the mid-seventeenth century, when liturgical practices were changed to conform to Roman practice. Waddell divides the manuscripts into two major recensions, each represented in several manuscripts. and Preface -- Book one: The Cistercian hymnal, its antecedents, its composition, its early evolution. Part 1. Introduction and orientation. Part 2. The first recension hymnal. Part 3. The second recension hymnal.
