- American prisoners carried their sports along with them, even to prison camp. This photograph captures the middle of a football game on the compound at Rastatt, as spectators line the sidelines. The American YMCA provided the equipment and the Y Committee organized the camp's sports program, which included NCO's serving as refugees. Note the large number of spectators and the POWs' quarters in the background.

- Two American officers, Major Harry Brown (left) and Major Dirk Bruins (right) sit on a bench outside of their barrack at Villingen with Major Sarda (center) of the Spanish Artillery. The Spanish government assumed responsibility for American interests in Germany after the Wilson administration severed diplomatic relations with Berlin in February 1917. As a neutral official, Major Sarda inspected German prison camps on behalf of the U.S. government.

- An American and a French POW play a game of checkers, while another prisoner drinks tea and a French prisoner writes a letter. Arab, French, and British prisoners watch the competition as spectators. The wide range of nationalities in the photograph depicts the world war the Central Powers faced in Europe.

- After their arrival in French territory, newly released American prisoners received "comfort bags" from the American Red Cross. Red Cross personnel stand to the right in front of the Red Cross truck with French troops in the rear.

- American POW's organize Red Cross supplies for distribution to U.S. prisoners under the supervision of a German non-commissioned officer. These parcels included food and bread sent by the Red Cross to augment the nutritional standards of American soldiers in the German prison camp. American POW's received a much higher daily caloric intake in relation to other war prisoners and even their German guards. The photograph was probably taken by Paul B. Anderson, an American YMCA WPA Secretary.

- The Germans released recently wounded American and British prisoners under their care at the front after the Armistice. These men would travel by ambulance to military hospitals for treatment of their wounds.

- This train, carrying American prisoners from Germany, passed through the railroad station in Bern, Switzerland. During the stop at the station, Red Cross nurses pass comforts to the American soldiers through the train windows.

- These four American sailors constituted the American Camp Help Committee at the prison camp at Brandenburg. This committee was responsible for the care of American prisoners in the facility and made sure that arriving prisoners received emergency funds and American Red Cross packets. Many prisoners, victims of torpedo attacks, arrived at Brandenburg without any personal belongings (the Germans assigned sailors and merchant mariners to this facility).
