- Description:
- "This restaurant sat on the northeast corner of east Clarkston and M24. The business was started by the Sorebelli family in the mid 1940s. It began as Lake Orion's first drive-in restaurant called the "Bella- Villa". The frive-in was located in a small wooden building close to M24. They served the famous 'Villa' sandwich which was the forerunner of the 'Sloppy Joe. By 1950 the Sorebellis had obtained the first liquor by-the-glass license in Lake Orion and established the 'Villa Inn' in the large farmhouse behind the 'Bella Villa' drive-in. 'The Villa' with chef Jim Dolfi developed into a very fine, first class restaurant. They entertained some of Lake Orion's most prominent residents such as Bruce Beemer and Jimmy Hoffa as well as many others from northern Oakland County. The original 'Villa Inn' burned in 1965 and was replaced with the current building by Joseph Pardis in 1967. This new resturant-bar was again called the 'VIlla Inn'. It was sold to the Christi family in 1977 and th name changed to the 'Orion House'. It remains a fine restaurant-bar today in 1995. Historically interesting is the fact that the 'Orion House' was Lake Orion's major hotel in 1874, being adjacent to the train station and the lake" c.1940 Jim Ingram Photos

- Description:
- In 1899, several Detroit businessmen gathered to discuss building a mill for the production of sugar from beets. Thirty cents per row was paid for weeding the beets that were later turned into molasses and sugar. Farmers brought their beets to the mill where they were weighed and tested and ground to sugar. Some farmers produced poorer quality beets due to the soil condition. This angered some farmers because they were paid based on the saccharine content of the beets; poorer soil yielded lower saccharine content. That caused some farmers to reduce acreage devoted to beet production. In 1904, Manager Parker and mill representatives implored farmers to subscribe more acreage for beet production. The pleas did not help and the mill, in only five short years, was closed. The Detroit Sugar Mill was torn down in 1906; some of the bricks were used to build homes in Rochester. Today, Halbach Field, Jaycee Field, and the Rochester Public Works occupy the site where the Detroit Sugar Mill once stood. - Buildings of the Parke-Davis Biological Farm. The Parke, Davis and Company was incorporated in the 1870s in Detroit, Michigan. The pharmaceutical company opened a facility in Avon Township in 1908, which has the distinction of being the first of its kind to hold a license for the manufacture of vaccines and other biological-based drugs in the United States. Commonly referred to as the Parkedale Farm or Parke-Davis Farm, it was comprised of land along Parkdale Road, bordered by Miller Avenue on the west, Van Hoosen Farm on the north, Dequindre Road on the east, the Michigan Central Railroad (MCR) on the south. Most of the farm buildings were demolished in 1999, but a few original structures remain. The site was owned by various companies over the years and was acquired by JHP Pharmaceuticals in 2007, which controls a parcel of land east of Letica Drive.
