- Karl Gude, director of the Media Sandbox in the Michigan State University College of Communication Arts and Sciences, delivers a talk entitled "How to engage your audience with visual storytelling." Gude explains the power of "infographics" to summarize and clarify complex information in all industries and for all audiences. He says that he loves to help explain things and provides numerous examples of how visualization methods may be used. Gude answers questions from the audience. Gude is introduced by MSU Librarian Amanda Tickner for the first event in the Visualization Community Seminar Speaker Series. Held in the MSU Main Library.

- President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush attend the 2008 National Medals of Arts and National Humanities Medals Presentation in the East Room of the White House. Laura Bush opens the ceremony by congratulating all the honorees for their achievements, which she says remind us that "freedom of expression is the hallmark of any democratic society -- and the foundation of our nation's greatness." President Bush introduces the Presidential Citizens Medal, given to four outstanding leaders in the arts. Bush speaks on each of the honorees achievements, saying that they all understand that "encouraging individual creativity and freedom of expression through the arts and scholarship strengthens and enhances our great country."

- President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden speak at the Federal Fiscal Responsibility Summit along with several economists. The group discusses the long term fiscal situation and what can be done to the budget to protect health care. President Obama describes what his administration has down in its first month in place, including the housing and financial stability plans. Obama says that the needs of health care, education, and energy innovation can no longer be ignored even as the national deficit continues to raise. Obama pledges to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term in office by creating a 10-year financial plan and assigning a overall budget management review of all federal government departments.
