The certificate contains the signatures of Controller Emery J. Garfield, and Mayor Alexander Lewis, a metallic gold embossed seal of the City of Detroit, engraved imagery from the seal, affixed sepia-toned head-and-shoulder portrait photographs of the fire commissioners William Duncan (top left), James W. Sutton (lower left), Theodore Hinchman (top right), and Lucretius H. Cobb (lower right). A handwritten note along the top edge of the certificate misidentifies the men as Joseph Godfrey, Peter Henkel, Benjamin Vernor, and Jerome Croal. The certificate is mounted on linen.
