- Description:
- This collection contains two patient account ledgers from the medical practice of Dr. J. S. North of Lansing, Michigan, and one autograph book belonging to Louisa Buck North. The first ledger's records date from 1895 to 1902, and includes an incomplete index of patient names at the beginning. The second ledger's records date from 1896 to 1911 and also contains a name index at front. Generally the records are for a head of household, and each entry may specify which family member or resident was treated. Treatment details are sparse, usually explained as "Visit & med." with the cost of service. Sometimes the entries are for services or products Dr. North obtained, such as threshing or lumber. Louisa Buck North's autograph book mostly records her farewell from New York state in 1841, when she left for "the wilds of Michigan."

- Description:
- A small collection of correspondence and photographs related to the Whiteley and Zimmerman families. These materials were possibly collected by Nellie M. Whiteley Zimmerman, whose name appears frequently in them. The collection also includes a disbound, oversize volume of what appear to be personal receipts for all kinds of household goods such as paint or contractor services; personal items like clothing and perfume; antiques and other home decorations; insurance; utility bills; membership renewals for fraternal organizations, clubs, etc.; and lots and lots of pigeon seed. Nearly all receipts have Nellie Zimmerman's name on them. The materials from this volume date from 1929 to 1953, and represent many local businesses and organizations in the Lansing area, including their often illustrated letterheads. The Whiteley family home was located at 414 South Washington Street in Lansing around the turn of the century. Photographs of the home are included in this collection, as are several portraits both identified and unidentified. Some may not have been taken in the Lansing area. The correspondence in the collection is mainly of a personal nature, to Nellie (Whiteley) Zimmerman or her mother Elizabeth. Most dates from before 1900.

- This collection contains two City of Lansing payroll ledgers, one for the Health Department (August 15, 1923 to March 15, 1924), and one for Public Works (December 29, 1920 to April 25, 1923). The Public Works ledger is a typed record organized by check number, listing the name of the employee, the amount of the check, and whether the check was cashed. The pages of the ledger are placed in reverse chronological order. The Health Department has only one completed, two-sided page of records. It lists employee name, check number, amount, and whether the check was cashed. Employees were paid on the 15th and last day of each month in this time period.

- Description:
- This is a collection of the papers of Jackson K. Elmer and family. Elmer was born in New York in 1840, and moved to Michigan in 1853 after the death of his father. He spent most of his adult life in Mason. He was married to Mary E. Bond in 1866, and they had a daughter Dora D. Elmer. Both his wife and daughter's correspondence and other materials including schoolwork and text books are part of this collection. Elmer was initially involved in carpentry and construction after learning the trade following public school in Rome, Michigan. He operated a carpentry and building business in partnership with a half brother Lyman W. Baker. He also served for the Union in the Civil War, first enlisting as a sergeant and then receiving promotions to second lieutenant, first lieutenant, and adjutant. There is significant correspondence with military organizations and friends, and other paperwork related to his military service. There are several warranty deeds for a piece of land in Ingham County between Mason and Lansing along the "State Road" which may have been where the Elmer, Baker, & Co. construction business or his future endeavors in mercantile, coal, and grocery was located. Elmer also owned 80 acres in Section 6, Aurelius Township, which he managed but never farmed himself. The collection also includes a large number of calling cards, carte de visite photographs and other portraits and photographs, as well as small ledgers, travel diaries, and account books. One of the earliest account books is for the Primary School Interest Fund account that was kept at the Bank of Michigan for 1839-1841, which was probably not Elmer's personal record. He used blank pages later in the volume for his household and Elmer & Baker business accounting and drafts of correspondence. This reuse of items is common in the collection, especially in bound volumes.

- Description:
- The records within this collection are primarily focused on the business run by father and son doctors Robert E. and Harold A. Miller, who were active from about 1890 to 1949. There are a significant number of financial documents within this collection. These include several books that track private expenses of the doctors, ledgers detailing amounts charged to patients alongside dates and treatments, and thirty separate books of daily visits with accounting. There are several files of accounting material, including debts owed by patients, notices of bankruptcy, notices to creditors, settled accounts, and correspondence and commission payment receipts from Lansing's Physicians' and Dentists' Accounting Bureau. In addition, there are approximately 100 of Dr. Harold A. Miller's Physician's Birth Memorandum booklets which date from 1917 to 1949. These booklets consist of basic birth information (infant name, date and time of birth, condition at birth, etc.; parents' names, employment, place of birth, etc.), and were kept by Dr. Harold A. Miller. The early births were likely at home; in later records the hospital location was recorded. Dr. Robert Eugene Miller (1869-1939) worked as a physician in Lansing from 1890 until his death in 1939. He was born in northern New York state on February 5, 1869. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1890. Dr. Robert Miller married his first wife on July 1, 1890 and soon moved to Lansing with her to begin practicing medicine. He was a Knight in the Knights of Pythias, among many other fraternal organization involvements, and had received honors from by state and local medical societies. He was also a steward and trustee of the Central Methodist church. He had one child, Harold, who took over his practice after his death. His first wife, Ida, died in 1923. He remarried a year later to a widow, Ethel Starr. Dr. Robert E. Miller died on March 1, 1939 and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lansing next to his two wives. Dr. Harold A. Miller (1891-1949) worked alongside his father from 1916 to 1939. Like his father, Harold Miller graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1916, where he specialized in obstetrics. Dr. Harold Miller served as a captain in the Medical Corps during World War 1 in 1917 and 1918, and as as secretary of the Ingham County Sanatorium Board of Control from 1924 to 1949. He was a president of the Ingham County Social Welfare Council, a member of the Masonic Order, and a member of the Bethel Shrine, serving as an officer at one point. He married his wife Winifred Burkman in 1917. They had met at the University of Michigan where she attended nursing school. The Millers had one son, Harold Jr., and two daughters, Virginia and Marilyn. Dr. Harold A. Miller passed away March 1, 1949, one decade after his father to the day, and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lansing. This collection appears to have been an estate sale purchase by David Caterino, who then left the collection to the Capital Area District Libraries.
