- Polish Legionnaires line up for their dinner ration of soup in the prison compound at Huszt in 1918. Prisoners retrieved large pots of soup from the camp kitchen and ladled out the rations in the open compound. The POW's receive their meals under the watchful eye of a Hungarian guard. The Hungarians interned these Polish prisoners in 1916 when they refused to take the oath of allegiance to the new Polish Regency in Poland.

- This photograph shows the interior of an enlisted men's barrack in the prison camp at Bustyahaza. These Polish prisoners lived in very crowded conditions with many of their belongings hanging from the walls of their quarters.

- Prisoners at the camp in Braunau-am-Inn used this one-Krone bank note to pay for their purchases in the prison canteen or for services. This currency could be used inside of the prison camp, a procedure designed to reduce corruption and prevent the use of this money to support escape attempts.

- This is a group photograph of the War Prisoners' Aid Secretaries who served in Austro-Hungarian prison camps early in 1917. The Senior WPA Secretary in Austria-Hungary, Edgar MacNaughten, sits in the center of the group.

- An Austrian general interrogates Russian prisoners of war captured in the fighting at Ivangorod in Russian Poland in 1915. POW's provided valuable information for both Central Power and Allied intelligence and field officers.

- The Russian prisoners in this prison camp display the contents of the recreation chest they just received from the YMCA's War Prisoners' Aid organization in Vienna. Each chest held games (Tambola, dominoes, chess, checkers, and Mensch aergere dich nicht), musical instruments (accordions and harmonicas), books, and Russian Orthodox crosses. An unidentified Association secretary, in the civilian clothing and wearing the C.V.J.M. armband), poses with the Russian prisoners. The YMCA committee in the prison camps then sent these recreation chests to POW's working outside the camp in Arbeitskommandos (labor detachments).
