- Dr. Izabela Kalinowska, professor of European Languages at SUNY-Stony Brook, delivers a talk entitled, "The Vicissitudes of Remembrance: From Early Polish Cinema's Depiction of World War II to Roman Polanski's The Pianist." Kalinowska puts Polanski's film "The Pianist," within the context of Polish-made films about World War II and also compares it to Polanski's other films. She describes the death and devastation the war caused in Poland, the resurrection of a Polish film industry under Soviet control, and how the war is recalled and portrayed. Kalinowska uses excerpts of "The Pianist" and other films to demonstrate her point. She answers questions from the audience. Kalinowska is introduced by Michigan State University Professor Keely Stauter-Halsted, acting director of the MSU Jewish Studies Program. Kalinowska speaks at the annual Esther and George Kessler Lecture on Jewish Film and Media. Part of the MSU Libraries' Colloquia Series. Co-sponsored by the Jewish Studies Program. 2. Interviews of Clare Rounsevell Ellinwood on her service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWI
- Description:
- Clare Rounsevell Ellinwood talks about her service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War One as a civilian secretary and says that she volunteered because her fiance had joined the French Army Ambulance Corp. She talks about working in a hospital in Philadelphia, being shipped to Brest, France on the USS Leviathan, traveling by train to the front, and finally being sent to a base near Vichy. She describes how the hospitals were set up, the constant shortage of food, and the utter devastation of the European battlefields. Ellinwood also recalls Armistice Day and the great celebration, and returning to the U.S. in 1919 to marry the man she had followed to France. Ellinwood says that in spite of the many hardships, her service overseas gave her a chance to do things she otherwise would not have gotten an opportunity to do. Ellinwood is interviewed by Margaret E. Duncan.

- In an oral history interview, Jessie Melis talks about her service as a teacher in occupied Germany from August 1950 to July 1953. She recalls the devastation in German cities, socializing with German citizens, German customs, her living quarters in Munich, taking meals in the officer's mess, her experiences with the black market and the depressed German economy. Melis also talks about meeting former Nazis, the differences between teaching in Germany and the U.S., the differences between American and German students and traveling to Berlin through the Russian Zone. Melis says that she traveled to Palestine and Jerusalem before finally returning to the U.S. to help her family and re-establish her career in East Lansing, MI. Melis is interviewed by Elsie Hornbacher.

- Elsie Hornbacher talks about her overseas service as a teacher in Japan, Italy and Austria after World War Two. Hornbacher talks about going to Japan in 1949, her ocean voyage to Yokohama, shipboard life, riding out a typhoon, the destruction still evident in postwar Japan, Japanese culture, and how life for the Japanese gradually began to improve. Hornbacher discusses the school where she worked, the curriculum, her students, visiting Hiroshima and about the Korean War and American dependents evacuating from Korea to Japan. Hornbacher says that she was reassigned to Naples in 1952, and that the city was unsafe and controlled by the mafia. After "enduring" a year in Italy, she says that she was next sent to Austria which she found both colorful and interesting and was finally sent back to the U.S. in 1954.

- Grace Van Wert talks about her service as a school teacher in post-war Germany from September 1946 to August 1947. Van Wert says that she decided to take a leave absence from her teaching job in the Lansing, MI school district, was assigned to a one room school in the resort town of Bad Wildungen in Germany. Van Wert talks about the town, the post-war devastation, the children of U.S. dependents who were her students, the limited food supplies, and the poverty and destitution which the German people were experiencing. Van Wert says that she gave away soap to German civilians, exchanged coffee for original artwork, paid the man teaching her children German in cigarettes and that she could smell decaying corpses even a year after the war had ended. Van Wert is interviewed by Elsie Hornbacher.

- Josephine Boecker discusses her service in the American Red Cross in the Pacific Theater from September 1943 to September 1946. Boecker describes being contacted by the Red Cross and later being called for war service, going through the required background checks, taking a leave of absence from her job, and enduring a grueling three month training regimen. Boecker says that she believed she was headed to North Africa and was surprised when she found herself aboard a train bound for the west coast and duty in the Pacific. She describes the four week trip to New Guinea, being stationed at the 47th General Hospital near Milne Bay, the camp conditions, sanitation, the food, the steps taken to prevent malaria, the perpetual rain, camp social events, and her job of setting up entertainment and recreation facilities for the troops. She says that she spent her leave in Australia and later moved forward with the troops to the Philippines. She recalls her reaction to the news of the dropping of the atomic bomb, being sent to Japan to staff a hospital in Tokyo, the destruction she saw, and the effects U.S. occupation had on Japanese society. Sound quality deteriorates near the conclusion of the recording.

- Retired Lieutenant Colonel Margaret E. Oaks talks about her twenty-one year career in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps which began in July 1944 during World War II. Oaks says she was attached to an "air-evac" hospital during the war and discusses her wartime quarters and her various uniforms, and remembers being in Le Harve, France after D-Day and being amazed at the level of destruction. Oaks says she did not consider making the Army a career but when the war ended just decided that she was "cut out to be in the military." She talks about serving in post-war Germany and lists her other postings throughout the U.S. and around the world and says that she worked in almost every nursing specialty during her long career, including supervision and command. Oaks is interviewed by Marjorie Brown.

She says she was later and shipped to Japan to staff a hospital in Tokyo and discusses the destruction she saw and the effects that the U.S. occupation had on Japanese society.
