Jefferson Avenue runs horizontally in the foreground. Michigan Avenue, and Gratiot Avenue extend into the corners of the background. Moonlight towers are visible rising among the buildings. The image is credited to J.R. Chapin and the Photo-Electrotype Engraving Company of New York. A smaller secondary scene across the bottom of the print shows a variety of ships and boats on the Detroit River--including the LANSDOWNE, EXCELSIOR, GREYHOUND, CITY OF CLEVELAND, and ALMA MUNRO--with the city's riverfront in the background.

The print consist of a black and white drawing that shows an elevated view of city, looking northward along Woodward Avenue just south of Jefferson Avenue. The drawing was a supplement to the Detroit Evening Journal on May 7, 1887. A separate engraved drawing along the bottom of the sheet shows a view of the waterfront with many different types of sail and steam vessels on the river. Printed text in the lower left corner shows "Photo-Electrotype Eng. Co., New York."
