The horse-drawn steam fire engine is parked on the street in front of the 2-story brick fire station. Five firemen (wearing helmets) are standing near the horse and wheel at the front of the steam engine, one fireman is seated in the driver's seat, and four firemen are standing adjacent to the rear wheel of the fire engine. The fireman who is nearest to the horse's head is wearing a belt with the lettering, "Foreman." The fireman who is standing above the rear wheel axle is wearing a belt with the lettering, "Engineer." All of the other firemen are wearing belts which show the name "K. C. Barker." Several bystanders are also visible near both ends of the fire engine. A young girl in a dress decorated with a ribbon, a harp, a small portrait of Lincoln, banners, garland, and a small flag are on the engine. The majority of the firefighters wear matching shirts, pants, helmets, and belts printed with "K.C. Barker." The men standing on the engine wear peaked caps, and one standing on the rear also wears a belt identifying him as an engineer. Two of the men on the far left hold bugles. - Large sepia-toned photograph of Detroit Fire Department Chief James C. Broderick and driver George Appel, seated in an Oldsmobile Autocrat, which is parked on a brick street, beside a brick wall. "DFD" is painted on the car's door. The photo is mounted on cardstock. A typewritten caption affixed to the verso reads: Chief James Broderick, pictured here in the driver's seat of an early motorized chief's car, served in Detroit's Fire Department for fifty continuous years. He was one of the few men who witnessed the passing from the hand engines to steam engines and from the steam engines to gasoline motor-driven apparatus. He saw the department grow from a small group of volunteers to a department of over 1,700 men. His first big fire after taking charge of the Fire Department was the spectacular Michigan Stove Works fire, which occurred on January 8, 1907, one week after he became Chief. The biggest fire in Chief Broderick's time was the D.M. Ferry Seed Company fire on New Year's Day, 1886, with a loss of a million dollars, a huge sum in those days.

Ramsey (seated in chairs), Thos. Lapine (driver), and Jim Shay (at tiller on rear end of truck). Firemen who are standing (left to right) include: Bob Nash, Wm. Sullivan, Timothy Shay, Alex. Gray, Malcolm Sutherland, and James E. Henry. A handwritten note at the bottom of the photo shows "Detroit Fire Department, Truck No.1." Handwriting on the verso notes "New Truck of 'Rescue' Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1, located in front of the first headquarters building located at the corner of Wayne and W. Larned Streets (behind the old Washington Mutual Building). Built in 1870 by the Hartshorn Co. of N.Y. City at a cost of $2,500 (note lack of running boards). The unit served until 1876 when it was replaced by a newer model."

- Program booklet for the Fourth Annual Fireman's Ball held by the Association of Ex-Members Detroit Steam Fire Department at Bamlet's Hall on Monday, April 3, 1899. The booklet consists of a half-folded sheet bound with blue string ending in a brown tassel into a half-folded cover--since torn at the crease--with a color illustration of a firefighter using a hose, while another firefighter runs holding an ax and a hook in the background on the front, and a fire hydrant on the back. The program of dances to be performed as well as the list of committee members are contained within. The program was printed by Watko and Dietz at 690 Gratiot Avenue.

Elliott, Treasurer Alexander Paton, and Secretary Benjamin Vernor, beside a blue embossed Fire Department of the City of Detroit seal. Hand-colored illustrations of uniformed firefighters, an early fire apparatus and firefighting equipment, the seal of the State of Michigan, and Neptune flanked by two winged monsters are bordered by scrollwork. The number "4" has been added to the helmets of the firefighters, likely indicating Elliott's involvement in Lafayette Fire Company No. 4. The certificate is mounted on linen.

The document lists positions he's held, bears a gold adhesive seal of the Fire Commission of the city of Detroit, and is signed by fire commissioners Fred T. Moran, William V. Moore, Sauborn T. McGraw, and Paul F. Bagley, as well as secretary George W. Stockwell. It shows the sterling qualities and abilities of the man, his faithful performance of duty and his rugged honest of purpose. No one can make such a record without possessing all the qualities which go to make up a brave, strong man. It is such me who furnish the stability of our service and make our Department a credit to our beautiful city. In granting the request of Chief Kendall for retirement, the Commission yields to a physical necessity. We feel that we have lost a loyal member of the Department, and that our City will miss a faithful public servant.
