Walsh, and G.S. Goldwater stand lined up beside the apparatus. A relief over the door of the headquarters reads, "Fire Department Headquarters, 1882." Two large bay entrances to the building are also in the background. The bay doors for the one behind the Hose Company No. 1's apparatus are open. "Hose Co. - Resolution, printed on a large piece of cardstock, from the Fire Commission of the City of Detroit memorializing Mark Henry Gascoigne following his death. The resolution is signed by James E. Tryon, Peter Henkel, Benjamin Vernor, Rufus W. Gillett, and Jerome Croul. The resolution reads: At a meeting of the Fire Commission of the City of Detroit held January 19, 1885, the following preamble and resolutions were adopted Whereas God in his infinite wisdom has removed from the walks of life Mark H. Gascoigne, Superintendent of the Telegraph of the Detroit Fire Department. A man who was ever faithful and ever true in the performance of the duties of his position. In recognition of this closing of a long career as an Officer of the Department of the Fire Commission of the City of Detroit does hereby Resolve, That in the death of Mark H. Gascoigne the Fire Department has lost a most efficient officer: the city an hones and good citizen and devoted servant and the world a noble chivalrous man who lived for the good of his fellows. Resolved, That while the ties which bound him to the Commissioners Officers and men of the Department by hooks of steel have been severed by the hand of Death, his bright record of good works will live forever, pictures which shall adorn the walls of memory until times shall be no more. Resolved, That his fidelity and staunch loyalty to duty justly entitles his name to a place on the roll of honor as one who has wrought unceasingly to uphold the standard of this Department. Resolved, That this preamble and resolutions be spread upon the record of the Commission, and a copy there of be placed in the Central Office of the Fire Alarm Telegraph; and a copy transmitted to the family of the deceased. - Color postcard depicting ten firemen aboard an automobile, with buildings in the background. Printed on verso: The Detroit Fire Department is being rapidly fitted out with automobile fire fighters. This view shows one of the departments responding to an alarm and going through the street at a rate of 75 miles an hour in one of their 30 H.P. Packard Motors Cars. This machine, known as the 30 squad wagon and carrying 12 men, is equipped with hand extinguishers and can easily take care of incipient fires. Handwritten message on verso, postmarked May 1912.

The steam engine has been decorated for President Lincoln's funeral march which was held in Detroit on April 25, 1865. The firemen are part of the Phoenix Steam Fire Engine Company No. 3 and the name, "Phoenix," is visible on several of the firemen's belts. - Sepia-toned albumen photo of a Detroit Fire Department horse-drawn ladder truck that is parked on Larned Street in front of the Fire Department Headquarters building. The old headquarters building was located at the corner of Wayne (now Washington Blvd.) and Larned St. and the name, "Larned," can be seen on the glass of the streetlight that is located on the left side of the photo. "Fire Department Headquarters" is written over the arched doorway that is located at the far right side of the ornate 3-story brick building. The shop of horseshoer, T. W. Leonard (Thomas W. Leonard, 78 Larned St. W.), can be seen just to the right of the headquarters building. Handwriting on the verso notes "The new 1883 Hayes-LaFrance 86' aerial truck of 'Rescue' Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1 in front of original fire headquarters. The large aerial ladder was raised by cranking the long worm gear attached to the turntable. The rear steersman (tiller) was seated at the rear over the wheels and under the main ladder."

It appears to have been written by several people. Inventories of gasoline, motor oil, and equipment have been noted on the final pages. The book is bound in a dark green worn cover with red corners. The original accession record identified two of the men standing in the top row--although it is unclear as two which exactly--as James Shea, and Timothy Callahan, and listed Richard Filbin and John O'Neil as being among the three men seated in the front. The man at the top right wears a helmet and belt identifying him as a member of Continental Company No. 8. He rests his hand on the shoulder of the men seated in front of him who wears a kepi hat and a belt also with the number "8." The two men standing in the center wear matching uniforms including firefighter belts identifying them as belong to one of the rescue companies. The both rest their hands on the shoulder of the man seated below them in the center, who wears a kepi hat, and a firefighter belt, the writing on which, "Stee[...]," is rendered partially illegible by glare. The man on the top right wears a helmet and firefighter belt which identifies him as a member of Neptune Company No. 2. A man with a kepi hat, and a rescue company belt sits in the lower right. Two helmets from Ladder Company No. 1 are positioned on the ground between the seated subjects. The photo is mounted on beige cardstock.

Barker Company No. 4, posed with their horse-drawn fire engine in front of their fire station, presumably at Orchard Street and Fifth Street during a memorial event for Abraham Lincoln. A young girl in a dress decorated with a ribbon, a harp, a small portrait of Lincoln, banners, garland, and a small flag are on the engine. The majority of the firefighters wear matching shirts, pants, helmets, and belts printed with "K.C. Barker." The men standing on the engine wear peaked caps, and one standing on the rear also wears a belt identifying him as an engineer. Two of the men on the far left hold bugles. One of them wears a "foreman," belt, the other wears one that is only partially legible, "2nd A[...]." The two men to their right both lean on an upright hose nozzle. The station in the background is a two-story brick structure, and two people peer from its upper windows. A hose apparatus is in the street on the left edge of the frame. - Document containing a portion of a transcript of the minutes of the Fire Commission of Detroit, consisting of a tribute to retiring fire chief James C. Broderick, handwritten in a blackletter typeface on parchment. It bears the signatures of William J. Chittenden, Jr., Thomas J. Rosquett, Charles F. Clippert, and A.A. Shcantz. The parchment is mounted on linen. The document reads: Tribute to James C. Broderick, Fire Chief Detroit, Michigan, Sept. 1st 1917 Representing not only the Citizens of Detroit, but feeling certain that we are voicing the sentiments and acting on behalf of our predecessors, We, the Fire Commission of Detroit, direct the Secretary to spread upon the minutes of this evening, the following expression of mingled regret and pleasure in the voluntary retirement of James C. Broderick, Chief, Detroit Fire Department. We express regret when we consider your honorable and unblemished record of fifty years of continuous service as a fireman and officer. Your work during that span of years included every department and branch of the service. You were called from each, only to assume more difficult and more responsible duties. Your keen insight, your personally unselfish response to duty, your thorough study and understanding of men and the department's requirements, your spirit of liberality and benevolence in dealing with others, your absolute integrity and your unfailing courage, all combined to make you the ideal Fire Chief. These qualities were known to your men and to your few intimates, far better than to our Citizens, for with it all you have that rare quality of feeling that duty well done is ample reward. Publicity makes no appeal to you, always shunning and never inviting it. It is our pleasure to express to you in person and to spread upon these Minutes, our knowledge of your many virtues and enviably record. We know that you are laying aside your duties only because you feel that you have well earned a rest. We hope that Divine Providence, Who shapes and controls the future of all men, will smooth your pathway, and will bless it with a most liberal apportionment of good health and happiness for many years. The certificate is signed by the group's president M. Murnane, treasurer W.M. Burgess, and secretary B. - Detroit Fire Department appointment certificate issued to Aroulet Richmond of Eagle Company No. 2, dated October 1843. The certificate is signed by Common Council clerk Robert E. Roberts, Fire Department President Chauncey Hurlbut, and Fire Department Treasurer Mason Palmer, and bears both the embossed seals of the Fire Department of the City of Detroit, and of the City of Detroit. At the top, an engraving by George W. Hatch, based on a painting by Henry Inman, captioned "Protection and Benevolence," shows the Roman god Neptune receiving a pair of keys from a woman, who wears a crown, holds a caduceus and stands beside a shield, possibly intended as either Minerva or Mercury. To their right, another woman hands a document marked "The Department Fund," to another woman, dressed in black, who sits cradling a baby. An engraving, credited to N. Gray, of a fire engine labeled Eagle Company No. 2 is at the bottom of the document.

The bottom of the image notes the photography studio of, "Friend & Smith, 244 - 246 Woodward Ave, Detroit." Noted on verso, "Wm. Sullivan," this is possibly an image of William Sullivan. Sullivan was a Lieutenant for Hook and Ladder Co. No. 2.
