- An Australian prisoner of war at Schneidemuehl sports a new sheepskin coat and boots provided by the Australian Comforts Fund. This type of coat was issued by the British Army for troops fighting in Western Front trenches during the winter months.

- British officers line up outside the Citadel on the parade grounds for their daily roll call by a German non-commissioned officer. Roll calls helped guards maintain security by identifying absent war prisoners. Frequent roll calls, especially at night, led to POW complaints of abuse. At Mainz, however, the British officers appear to take the roll call in stride.

- French prisoners practice training their fire hose on the roof of a barrack at Darmstadt, as seen from the prison guard tower. Prisoners man the pumps in the foreground to provide the stream of water. Both German authorities and war prisoners had a great interest in preventing barrack fires which could have resulted in large numbers of casualties.

- Four prisoners of war are dressed in costume in the prison compound at Heuberg, probably in preparation for a theatrical performance. Men played all of the roles in any performance.

- This French medical corpsman, Leon Pailet, represented the French prisoners of war at the prison camp at Goettingen. He was equipped with a desk, an ample supply of stationery, a large book collection, and has flowers for decoration. He also has a pet cat to spend time with during his incarceration.

- The Russian prisoners in this prison camp display the contents of the recreation chest they just received from the YMCA's War Prisoners' Aid organization in Vienna. Each chest held games (Tambola, dominoes, chess, checkers, and Mensch aergere dich nicht), musical instruments (accordions and harmonicas), books, and Russian Orthodox crosses. An unidentified Association secretary, in the civilian clothing and wearing the C.V.J.M. armband), poses with the Russian prisoners. The YMCA committee in the prison camps then sent these recreation chests to POW's working outside the camp in Arbeitskommandos (labor detachments).

- Edgar MacNaughten (center in civilian clothing) and Austrian officers open a new Association building in an unidentified Austrian prison camp. They are surrounded by Russian prisoners of war who will soon enjoy the services offered in the facility.

- A French prisoner executes a jump while ice skating at an unidentified German prison camp. Two other POW's are skating behind him. While winters meant cold barracks and a struggle to keep warm for many prisoners, some POW's took advantage of the weather for some healthy exercise.

- Georges Desson was interned in this cell at Fort Hirson, a French fortress south of Maubeuge near the border with Belgium. The French did not maintain this fortress before the war so it remained generally intact during the German advance into northern France. Desson joined several French internees in captivity.
