Handwritten on verso, " fireboat "James Battle" launched at Det. shipbuilding yards in Wyandotte on Oct. 13 1900, went into service at foot of fifth St. on Jan. 15 1901, length 122 ft., beam 25 ft., draft 11 ft., speed 14 m.p.h. in 1936, was converted to diesel engine was decommisioned Feb. 1940 was sold to Sincennes-McNaughton firm of Montreal Canada, was streamlined into a tugboat and was still in service in 1972."

Several crewmembers are standing on the foredeck and one fireman is operating a fire hose nozzle above the pilothouse. Handwriting on the verso shows "Detroiter, Detroit's first fire tug; wooden, built at Toledo, 1893."

- Mounted sepia-toned group portrait photograph of twelve uniformed firefighters posed outside in front of a brick wall. Six men sit in chairs in the front, and six stand behind them. The fifth seated man from the left is identified as Engineer William Mauron[?]. Mauron and the two men to his left all have bugle insignia on their collars indicating their ranks. The photo is mounted on black mat board. "Geo. E. Ash, 452 Junction Ave." is printed on the verso.

- Sepia-toned photo of five firemen on a ladder who are fighting a fire. The base of the ladder is located on a fire truck and the top of the ladder has been set to access a window on the top floor of a 4-story brick building. A firehose can be seen along the length of the ladder. One fireman is located at the base of the ladder, another is midway, and three are at the top with the firehose. A sign on the front of the building indicates that a dental office is located inside although the name of the business is partly obscured by the ladder.
