The announcer's booth, bearing the date July 17, 1888 is in the center of the frame. A row of spectators is at the bottom of the frame. A crowd is gathered around the horse, visible in frame as feet and legs among piles of bricks and boards on the far side of the horse, and shadows of men in hats in the foreground. A partially out of frame man on the left pulls a chain in an effort to free the horse. Another partially out of frame man in front of him holds the end of a rope tied to the horse.
